Chapter 4 - The LedgerThe ballroom manager brought a small laptop at Lily’s request.

Victoria tried to stop him.

“This is a private gala.”

The manager looked around at the recording guests.

“It stopped being private several minutes ago.”

He inserted the memory drive.

Folders appeared.

Invoices.

Bank transfers.

Donor lists.

Scholarship payments.

The Langford Foundation claimed it had funded treatment, housing and education for hundreds of low-income children.

The records showed something else.

Millions had moved into luxury-consulting accounts.

Private travel.

Designer renovations.

A yacht charter listed as “youth outreach.”

Victoria’s personal stylist had been paid through an education program.

A ballroom floral bill had been charged to emergency housing.

Then one account appeared repeatedly.

V.L. Strategic Holdings.

Victoria Langford.

She stared at the screen.

“These files are fabricated.”

The elderly donor asked:

“Then why does the account carry your tax identification?”

Victoria said nothing.

Lily’s tears returned.

“My mother found it.”

The manager opened an audio file.

Emma’s voice filled the grand hall.

I reported the transfers to the board. Victoria told me nobody would believe a staff woman over a Langford.

Guests turned toward Victoria.
