Chapter 2 - The Ironclad Contract

Arthur Sterling pushed his way to the front of the crowd, his face flushed red with indignation. "Alexander, this is an outrage! We are in the middle of our anniversary gala. You are embarrassing our family!"

"Your family embarrassed itself the moment your son laid a hand on my daughter," my father replied, his voice echoing in the quiet room.

The crowd gasped. Whispers rippled through the socialites and board members. The people who had laughed at my humiliation just minutes ago were now staring in stunned silence.

I unlocked the corridor door and stepped out. The crowd parted for me instinctively. When my father saw the angry red handprint blooming across my cheek, his jaw tightened so hard I thought his teeth might shatter.

"Clara," Julian started, his voice trembling slightly. "Tell your father this is a misunderstanding."

"There is no misunderstanding," I said, my voice steady.

My father’s lead attorney stepped forward, opening a thick leather folder. "Arthur Sterling, Julian Sterling. Five years ago, when Clara’s trust bailed your failing resort group out of bankruptcy, a morality and protection clause was embedded in the marriage contract."

Arthur sneered. "A standard clause. It means nothing!"

"It means," the attorney corrected sharply, "that if physical harm or public defamation was inflicted upon Clara by any member of the Sterling family, the grace period on your debt would immediately terminate, and ownership of all collateral—including this resort—would instantly revert to the Vance family."

Julian turned pale. "You... you can't do that."

"I just did," my father said. "And because you breached the contract, all corporate accounts tied to the Sterling name have been frozen."
