Chapter 7 - The Hostile Takeover

The following Monday, the Sterling Resort Group board of directors held their emergency meeting. Arthur sat at the head of the table, looking ten years older.
"We need a loan to stabilize the stock," Arthur pleaded with the board. "If we can just weather this PR storm—"
The boardroom doors swung open. I walked in, wearing a sharp, tailored navy suit, followed by my legal team.
"You aren't getting a loan, Arthur," I said, taking the seat at the opposite end of the table. "Because the banks know you have no collateral."
"You have no right to be here!" Arthur shouted, slamming his fist on the table.
"Actually, she does," the Chairman of the Board interrupted. "Arthur, as of this morning, Vance Holdings has purchased fifty-one percent of our outstanding shares. Clara is our new majority shareholder."
Arthur gasped, clutching his chest.

"And my first motion as majority shareholder," I said smoothly, looking at the board, "is the immediate termination of Arthur Sterling as CEO, without severance, pending a forensic audit of his expense accounts."
The board voted unanimously. Arthur was escorted out of his own building by security.
