Chapter 1 - The Slap on the PorchVanessa Sinclair pointed toward the black suitcase behind Martha Collins.

“Take your suitcase and get out of my house.”

Martha stood beneath the estate’s covered porch, arms folded over her worn gray apron. For thirty-four years, she had opened those doors before sunrise, polished the silver, and remembered every guest who treated the mansion like a stage.

“Your house?” she asked.

Vanessa struck her once across the face.

Martha’s head turned. She raised a hand to her cheek but did not retaliate.

Vanessa leaned closer, emerald velvet catching the daylight.

“By morning, you’ll be gone.”

That night, Martha sat behind the mahogany desk in the private study. Mr. Harris placed a cream legal file before her. A red wax seal glowed beneath the amber lamp.

Martha opened the folder, took the fountain pen, and signed the final line.

Mr. Harris witnessed it without speaking.

Martha closed the file.

“By morning, she will.”

The signature did not transfer the mansion to Martha.

It ended the privilege that had allowed Vanessa to live there.
