Inside were original property surveys, trust ledgers, employee contracts, and correspondence written by Eleanor during the final year of her life.
One folder contained a draft application to dissolve the preservation trust.
The proposed beneficiary was a development company created by Vanessa’s brother.
Another file showed plans to divide the estate into luxury residences once Martha and the remaining staff were removed.
Charles joined by video.
He looked at the documents, then at his wife.
“You told me the development proposal was abandoned.”
“It was only an option.”
“You used my electronic signature.”
“I was protecting what should belong to us.”
Martha watched Charles absorb the truth.
Vanessa had not slapped her because of a suitcase.
She had attacked the person standing between her and a property scheme worth millions.
Yet Martha felt no triumph.
