Martha was listed publicly as the longtime housekeeper.
Privately, Eleanor had appointed her resident guardian of the estate.
The role gave Martha authority to protect the property, its employees, and any vulnerable resident from misconduct. She had never used that power because Eleanor instructed her to intervene only when the house itself became a weapon.
After Charles left for a business trip, Vanessa dismissed three employees, locked an elderly gardener out of his cottage, and ordered Martha to surrender the household records.
Martha refused.
The suitcase on the porch was not hers.
It contained files Vanessa had removed from Eleanor’s locked archive.
Martha had stopped the case before it reached a waiting car.
Vanessa assumed she was catching a servant stealing luggage.
