He told Martha that staying would feel like taking sides.
“You already took a side,” she said. “You chose not to see.”
He and Vanessa began living separately.
Vanessa returned some disputed funds and cooperated with investigators, avoiding criminal charges but accepting a civil settlement that ended her interest in the development company.
She sent Martha a written apology.
It did not ask for immediate forgiveness.
Martha appreciated that more than grand remorse.
Charles requested permission to visit the estate.
Martha approved it under the same rules applied to any family guest. No private access to records. No authority over employees. No promises made on behalf of the trust.
He accepted.
The change embarrassed him, but embarrassment was not harm.
For the first time, Charles began learning the difference.
Martha unpacked her own small suitcase, which had remained untouched in her room.
She had prepared it before the porch confrontation because she feared Vanessa might succeed.
