The document Martha signed was titled Protective Residence Termination.
It did not decide ownership. It suspended Vanessa’s permission to occupy the estate pending a formal trust hearing.
At seven, Vanessa descended the staircase wearing a silk robe and found her belongings packed in the foyer.
“You cannot remove me from my husband’s home.”
Mr. Harris remained calm.
“Your husband does not own this property.”
Vanessa looked toward Martha.
“She is an employee.”
“She is the estate’s appointed resident guardian.”
Vanessa laughed, but the sound weakened when Harris showed her Eleanor Sinclair’s notarized appointment.
The document granted Martha no fortune and no personal claim to the mansion. It gave her something Vanessa considered more dangerous: lawful authority independent of the Sinclair family.
Vanessa demanded to call Charles.
Martha nodded toward the telephone.
“Call him.”
Charles answered from Boston.
When Vanessa described the order, he became silent.
