Chapter 12 - EVELYN’S SECRET

Charles’s words followed Evelyn into the hospital waiting room.
Adrian survived surgery. Charles, Victoria, Grant, Celia, and Pike were held without bail. The evidence seemed overwhelming.
But Noah wanted an answer.
“Why did Dad choose you?” he asked.
Evelyn sat beside his bed and finally told him the truth she had carried for twelve years.
Before she became Evelyn Brooks, senior housekeeper, she had been Evelyn Carter, an accounting analyst at Whitmore Global. She found missing pension money and brought it to Daniel.
They worked together for months.
They also fell in love.
Daniel was trapped in a public marriage with Victoria, arranged to protect a business merger. He planned to divorce her after exposing Charles.
Then Evelyn became pregnant.
She lost the baby during a staged car accident meant to scare Daniel into silence.
Charles ordered the attack.
Daniel begged Evelyn to disappear. Instead, she returned under her mother’s last name and took a job inside the estate, where she could watch Noah and gather evidence.
“I stayed because your father believed they might hurt you,” she said. “And because after I lost my child, protecting you gave me a reason to get up every morning.”
Noah was quiet for a long time.
“Did you love my dad more than my mom did?”
“I don’t know what Victoria felt,” Evelyn said. “But I know your father loved you more than anything.”
Noah reached for her hand.
“Then he chose the right person.”
A nurse entered carrying legal papers.
Victoria had filed an emergency petition from jail. She claimed Daniel was not Noah’s biological father and demanded a DNA test to invalidate the trust.
The petition included laboratory results showing no biological match.
Noah stared at the page.
“My whole life is a lie?”
Dr. Price examined the report.
Then he said, “Noah, this sample wasn’t compared to Daniel.”
He pointed to the donor code.
May you like
“It was compared to Charles Whitmore.”
And the result proved Charles was not Daniel’s biological father either.
