Chapter 5 - THE DEAD MAN’S WARNING

Captain Ortiz replayed the final ten seconds.

The man on-screen looked exactly like Daniel Whitmore, but the timestamp showed he had entered the room less than an hour earlier.

Mason zoomed in. “That isn’t Daniel.”

Evelyn saw it then. The left hand had no burn scar. Daniel had scarred two fingers saving Noah from a kitchen accident years ago.

“Who is he?” Ortiz asked.

Evelyn remembered a man rarely mentioned at the estate. Daniel’s younger half brother, Adrian Vale, had vanished after a boardroom fight fifteen years earlier. He and Daniel shared the same father and nearly the same face.

“Adrian,” she said.

The monitor suddenly flashed red.

REMOTE WIPE INITIATED.

Mason typed rapidly. “Someone found the backup network.”

Files began disappearing.

“Copy the bedroom video!” Ortiz ordered.

Mason transferred it to three encrypted drives seconds before the server shut down.

A hidden speaker crackled overhead.

Adrian’s voice filled the cellar.

“Evelyn Brooks, take Noah to St. Matthew’s Clinic in Stamford. Trust Dr. Samuel Price. Do not trust Whitmore Memorial Hospital.”

Then the lights went out.

A metal door slammed shut behind them.

Smoke began pouring through the ventilation system.

“They’re trying again,” Mason said.

Ortiz fired twice at the lock, but the steel held.

Evelyn searched the wine racks. Daniel had once joked that his family loved secret exits more than honest conversations. She found a brass lever shaped like a grapevine and pulled.

A section of stone wall opened onto a drainage tunnel.

They escaped seconds before the server room filled with smoke.

Outside, Noah’s ambulance was preparing to leave.

Victoria stood beside it, speaking quietly to the driver.

Evelyn ran closer and heard her say, “Take him to Whitmore Memorial. Use the private entrance. No police escort.”

The driver nodded.

Evelyn stepped into the road.

“No,” she said. “You’re taking him to St. Matthew’s.”

Victoria smiled without warmth.

“You’re not going anywhere with my son.”

Noah stared at her from inside the ambulance.

“She isn’t my mother,” he said. “And I just remembered who cut the brakes on my father’s plane.”
