Chapter 9 - THE HARBOR RESCUE
The explosion threw Grant against the rail.
Victoria abandoned Noah instantly and jumped toward a lifeboat.
Evelyn saw the same truth she had seen on the lawn: when danger came, the Whitmores saved themselves first.
Harbor officers boarded through smoke. Grant tried to reach the pistol, but Noah rolled over his hand with the wheelchair.
“That was for my dad,” Noah said.
Evelyn climbed aboard from the patrol boat. Flames moved along the rear deck, but firefighters kept them back long enough for her to reach him.
“You came,” Noah said.
“Always.”
Victoria was pulled from the water. Grant was arrested. Celia Voss was found hiding inside a storage compartment with fake passports, cash, and forged guardianship papers.
Charles remained missing.
Back at the clinic, Noah gave a full statement. Grant confessed only after learning Charles had emptied a secret account and left him without escape money.
According to Grant, the pension theft had begun years earlier. Daniel discovered it and threatened to report the family. Victoria sabotaged the plane under Charles’s orders. Grant altered maintenance records. The crash killed Daniel and injured Noah, but Noah’s survival created a problem.
They needed him alive until the trust restrictions expired.
Then they needed him dead before he turned eighteen.
The mansion fire was their final plan.
“But why tonight?” Evelyn asked.
Grant looked toward Noah. “Because he found Daniel’s will.”
Noah shook his head. “That’s not all I found.”
He explained that beneath Daniel’s desk drawer was a hidden compartment containing a list of names—judges, bankers, politicians, and company officers who had helped Charles hide money.
The list had not been in the blue folder.
Noah had taped it beneath his wheelchair seat.
Ortiz checked the chair.
The paper was gone.
Mason reviewed harbor footage and found the moment it disappeared. During the rescue, a paramedic reached under the seat and removed it.
The paramedic was not employed by the city.
