Chapter 3 - THE WOMAN THEY BLAMED

For three seconds, the lawn went silent.
Then two officers moved toward Evelyn.
“That’s insane,” she said.
Victoria began crying with perfect timing. “She has been obsessed with Noah for years. She kept records on our family. She stole private documents. Tonight I saw her near the east-wing study before the alarm.”
Charles added, “We have security footage.”
Evelyn looked at the six guards standing behind him. None met her eyes.
Noah tried to sit up on the stretcher. “She saved me!”
“Easy,” a paramedic said.
“She saved me because they wouldn’t!” Noah shouted.
Police Captain Lena Ortiz held up one hand. “No one is being arrested until my fire investigator speaks with everyone.”
Grant stepped close to Ortiz. “Captain, do you know who we are?”
“Yes,” Ortiz replied. “People standing outside a burning house.”
The answer cut through the family’s confidence.
Evelyn handed Ortiz the blue folder but kept her voice low. “The bedroom window was nailed shut. The wheelchair was removed. The restraint buckle was jammed. Someone locked us inside after I entered.”
Ortiz’s expression changed. “Who has keys to that corridor?”
“Family, security, and senior staff.”
Victoria folded her arms. “Convenient.”
A firefighter approached carrying a small black device in an evidence bag.
“Captain, we found this near the east-wing electrical panel,” he said. “Remote ignition timer. Commercial grade.”
Grant’s smile disappeared.
Ortiz ordered the estate sealed.
Then a young security guard named Mason Reed pulled Evelyn aside.
“I need to tell you something,” he whispered. “The cameras did record tonight, but not the way Mr. Whitmore thinks.”
“What does that mean?”
“Daniel Whitmore installed a backup system before he died. Separate server. Nobody knew I found it.”
“Where is it?”
Mason looked toward the burning west tower.
“In the old wine cellar.”

A gunshot cracked from behind the greenhouse.
Mason dropped beside Evelyn.
