Chapter 2 - The Folder in the Linen ClosetDaniel found the blue folder hidden beneath towels in the upstairs linen closet.
Inside were medication schedules, bank statements, property papers, and six letters Evelyn had written but never mailed.
Each letter was addressed to Daniel.
In them, Evelyn described meals withheld as punishment, medical appointments canceled without her consent, and household staff dismissed after questioning Grace’s treatment of her.
Daniel had received cheerful messages from his mother every Sunday.
Grace had written most of them.
She managed Evelyn’s phone under the excuse that arthritis made typing difficult. Whenever Daniel requested a video call, Grace said Evelyn was sleeping or ashamed of how frail she looked.
The bank statements showed monthly transfers from Evelyn’s account to a company called Bellweather Home Services.
Daniel had never heard of it.
Grace claimed the payments covered private nursing and accessibility improvements.
No nurse had visited in four months. The bathroom remained inaccessible, and Evelyn’s wheelchair ramp was still unfinished.
Daniel looked at his mother.
