Chapter 3 - The House Grace Said Was HersThe Connecticut mansion had belonged to Evelyn since her husband’s death.
Grace often introduced herself as its owner and told staff Daniel would inherit everything soon. She ordered renovations, hosted parties, and charged personal purchases to the household account.
Evelyn had allowed it at first.
After a stroke weakened her left side, she depended on Grace for transportation, meals, and medication. Daniel was stationed overseas and believed his wife had sacrificed her career to care for his mother.
Grace reminded Evelyn of that sacrifice whenever she resisted.
“You’re the reason I’m trapped here,” she would say.
Three months before Daniel returned, Grace placed a deed transfer before Evelyn. It granted Grace a controlling interest in the property in exchange for lifelong care.
Evelyn refused to sign.
After that, food portions became smaller. Her phone disappeared more often. The housekeeper who witnessed an argument was dismissed the next morning.
The blue folder contained the unsigned deed and a second copy bearing Evelyn’s signature.
Evelyn stared at it.
“That one isn’t mine.”
Daniel’s anger became colder.
