Why had he allowed Grace complete control over his mother’s finances?
Why had he ignored changes in Evelyn’s speech and weight?
Why had he accepted photographs instead of insisting on private conversations?
Daniel said military service kept him away.
The elder-protection investigator did not argue.
“Distance explains what you missed. It does not explain why you stopped checking.”
Daniel remembered the relief he felt whenever Grace said everything was handled. His mother’s needs frightened him because they had no clear mission, deadline, or chain of command.
Grace offered certainty.
He accepted it without asking who paid the price.
Even his dramatic return became part of the review. Throwing the plate had intimidated Grace and risked scattering sharp pieces near Evelyn’s wheelchair.
Daniel admitted it was unnecessary.
“I wanted her to feel afraid.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“I needed you to make me safe, not make the room more frightening.”
