He did not move in with Evelyn.
He rented an apartment nearby and visited according to a schedule she approved. A professional care coordinator handled medication, meals, and transportation.
At first, Daniel inspected everything as though searching for another Grace.
Evelyn finally told him to stop questioning every aide in front of her.
“You keep looking for danger so hard that you forget to see me.”
He began asking what she wanted instead.
Some afternoons she wanted help with paperwork. Others she wanted him to leave after tea so she could watch television alone.
Daniel attended counseling for the anger he had once mistaken for protection. He learned that control could wear a uniform, speak gently, and still remove another person’s choices.
Grace wrote him from prison.
Her letters described therapy, remorse, and the unpaid labor she believed had pushed her toward resentment.
