Chapter 1 - The Hand That Never Landed

Vanessa Croft’s diamond bracelet flashed beneath the chandeliers as she raised her hand.
Eleanor Sterling sat helplessly in the wheelchair in front of her.
The old woman’s silk shawl had slipped from one narrow shoulder.
Her fingers trembled against the armrest.
Around them, nearly three hundred guests filled the Grand Hall of Sterling Palace.
Politicians laughed beneath painted ceilings.
Billionaires lifted champagne glasses.
A string quartet played beside the marble staircase.
No one moved.
Vanessa’s palm began descending toward Eleanor’s face.
Emma Torres caught her wrist in midair.
The music stopped.
Vanessa stared at the maid’s hand as though something filthy had touched her.
Emma’s black service dress was plain.
Her white apron still carried a drop of red wine from Table Twelve.
She knew exactly what stopping Vanessa could cost.
Her job.
Her apartment above the staff wing.
The medical insurance that paid for her younger brother’s treatment.
She tightened her grip anyway.
“Do not touch her,” Emma said.
Vanessa pulled once.
Emma did not release her.
“Do you know who runs this event?” Vanessa screamed.
Her voice struck the painted ceiling and returned as an echo.
Guests turned toward them.
Several phones appeared.
Vanessa struggled again.
Emma kept herself between the wheelchair and the socialite.
“I know she told you no.”
Vanessa’s face twisted.
“She is confused.”
“She needs to return upstairs.”
Eleanor lifted her head.
“I am not confused.”
The words were weak.
They were clear.
Vanessa leaned closer to Emma.
“You are a servant.”
“You have ten seconds to let go before I make sure no hotel, mansion, or private household in this country hires you again.”
Emma’s heart hammered.
She had heard threats from wealthy guests before.
This one sounded practiced.
Then a man’s voice came from behind Vanessa.
“You will not need ten seconds.”
Vanessa stopped moving.
The people nearest the staircase stepped aside.
Alexander Sterling stood three feet behind her.
He wore a midnight tuxedo without a tie.
Silver touched the dark hair near his temples.
He had returned from Singapore two days earlier without announcing it publicly.
Most guests believed he was still overseas.
Vanessa’s expression emptied.
“Alexander.”
He looked first at Emma’s hand around Vanessa’s wrist.
Then at the raised arm.
Then at his mother.
Eleanor’s lower lip was bleeding.
Alexander moved beside the wheelchair.
“Mother.”
Vanessa tried to pull free again.
Emma released her only when Alexander placed himself between them.
“What happened to her mouth?” he asked.
Vanessa laughed nervously.
“She bit herself.”
Eleanor looked toward her son.
“She pushed my medicine into my mouth.”
Alexander’s gaze returned to Vanessa.
The Grand Hall became so quiet that the chandeliers seemed to hum.
“You raised your hand to my mother.”
Vanessa lowered her arm.
“I was stopping her from embarrassing herself.”
“In her own home?”
Vanessa glanced toward the guests.
“This event belongs to the Croft Foundation.”
Alexander looked around the palace.
Every painted ceiling.
Every marble column.
Every acre of oceanfront land.
“No.”
“This event is being held in my home.”
He turned toward the head of security.
“Lock every exterior door.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
“You cannot detain my guests.”
“I am not detaining them.”
“I am preserving witnesses.”
Alexander knelt beside Eleanor.
“What did she give you?”
The old woman looked toward the silver tray near the wall.
A crystal glass rested there.
White residue clung to its bottom.
“My evening medicine,” she whispered.
Emma looked at the glass.
She had carried that tray from the private kitchen.
Vanessa had refused to let anyone else touch it.
Alexander followed her eyes.
“Emma.”
She stiffened.
“Yes, sir.”
“Who prepared my mother’s drink?”
May you like
Emma looked directly at Vanessa.
“She did.”
