Chapter 4 - The Palace Behind the Event

The gala ended under police supervision.

Guests were released after providing names and statements.

Some complained about missed flights.

Others tried to delete videos.

Detective Ortiz ordered key recordings preserved.

By midnight, clips of Emma catching Vanessa’s wrist were spreading online.

The headlines focused on scandal.

The powerful socialite.

The brave maid.

The billionaire owner.

The hidden identity of the old woman.

Emma hated the way strangers turned the moment into entertainment.

Eleanor had almost been struck.

She had been poisoned.

There was nothing satisfying about the fear on Vanessa’s face.

Alexander moved his mother to a private hospital.

Independent doctors took control of her care.

Dr. Vale was suspended pending investigation.

The palace became a crime scene.

Emma returned to the staff wing to pack a small bag.

She did not know whether she still had a job.

She had grabbed a guest.

She had become a witness against the family’s future daughter-in-law.

Her brother’s insurance depended on her employment.

A knock sounded at the door.

Alexander stood in the hallway.

He no longer wore the tuxedo jacket.

His shirtsleeves were rolled to his forearms.

“You are not being dismissed.”

Emma looked toward her open suitcase.

“I broke service protocol.”

“You prevented an assault.”

“I also saw signs for months.”

“So did I.”

“You were overseas.”

“I had phones.”

“Reports.”

“Security feeds.”

“I accepted Vanessa’s explanations because questioning her would have disrupted business negotiations.”

He looked toward the small photograph of Mateo beside Emma’s bed.

“My absence was convenient.”

“That does not make it innocent.”

Emma had not expected him to say that.

Most powerful men transformed guilt into reasons others should comfort them.

Alexander did not ask.

He placed a temporary employment agreement on the desk.

“Your position and insurance remain active.”

“This document prevents anyone in management from changing them during the investigation.”

Emma did not touch it.

“What happens after the investigation?”

“You may choose whether you want to stay.”

“You should not control the person investigating your family.”

“I am not asking you to investigate.”

“I am asking you to tell the truth.”

Emma picked up the agreement.

“Vanessa knew about Mateo.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“We found an internal file in the event office.”

The file listed every palace employee.

Beside each name was a category.

Debt.

Immigration status.

Medical dependency.

Family conflict.

Useful pressure.

Emma’s name carried two notes.

Brother’s treatment.

Fear of job loss.

Vanessa had not merely insulted staff.

She had studied how to silence them.

Alexander handed Emma a copy of the page.

She saw names of people she worked beside.

A chef whose wife lacked legal status.

A valet with gambling debt.

A housekeeper supporting three children.

Vanessa had built the event using people too frightened to resist.

Emma looked up.

“She knew I would hesitate.”

“Yes.”

“She was right.”

“But you still caught her.”

Emma folded the page.

“One moment does not erase every time I looked away.”

“No.”

“It does not.”

Alexander’s answer hurt.

It also respected her.

Before leaving, he paused.

“There is another reason I need your statement.”

“What reason?”

“My mother changed her will two months ago.”

“She left control of the palace to an independent charitable trust.”

“Vanessa’s guardianship petition would cancel that change.”

Emma looked toward the painted ceiling above the staff corridor.

“Who benefits from the trust?”

“Employees.”

“Local historical programs.”

“And a residential medical foundation.”

“What foundation?”

Alexander looked at Mateo’s photograph.

“One that would provide treatment regardless of employment.”

May you like

Vanessa had not only wanted Eleanor’s shares.

She wanted to stop the palace from leaving the family’s private control.
