Chapter 5 - The Will Beneath the Chapel Floor
Eleanor’s attorney arrived from Boston the next morning.
Her name was Rebecca Sloan.
She carried a sealed copy of the new will.
The original remained hidden inside the palace.
Eleanor had refused to store it with the company’s legal department because Vanessa controlled the general counsel.
Rebecca explained that the document transferred Sterling Palace into the Eleanor Sterling Public Trust upon Eleanor’s death.
The trust would maintain the property as a cultural center, medical retreat, and employee housing program.
Alexander would remain chairman of Sterling Holdings.
He would not personally own the palace.
Vanessa’s engagement strategy depended on marrying the man she believed would inherit everything.
Eleanor had removed the largest symbol from that inheritance.
“Where is the original?” Detective Ortiz asked.
Rebecca looked toward Emma.
“Mrs. Sterling said the woman who still dusts the chapel would understand.”
Emma did.
The palace chapel had been closed for renovations.
Only Emma continued cleaning it because Eleanor asked that fresh flowers remain near her late husband’s memorial.
A loose stone beneath the first pew had shifted every time Emma knelt there.
No one else noticed because the chapel staff had been dismissed.
Police escorted Emma inside.
The small room smelled of wax and stone.
She removed the first pew cushion.
Beneath it was a brass key.
The key opened a panel behind the memorial plaque.
A document case rested inside.
So did a handwritten journal.
Rebecca verified the will.
Detective Ortiz sealed both items.
Emma opened only the first page of the journal with permission.
Eleanor’s handwriting was steady.
Vanessa believes age means surrender.
Alexander believes distance protects him from choosing sides.
Both are wrong.
Emma continued.
If I become suddenly confused, test my medicine.
If Martin Vale becomes my only doctor, remove him.
If the palace cameras stop recording my rooms, Owen Hale is involved.
Emma looked toward Detective Ortiz.
“The security chief.”
The journal named him directly.
Hale had delivered the medical files.
He had also controlled every camera in the private wing.
Police searched his office.
He was gone.
His vehicle had left the estate twenty minutes after the gala lockdown began.
A hidden safe contained cash, false passports, and copies of Eleanor’s medical records.
One file described a plan called Evening Bell.
The title referred to the gold bell Vanessa rang before Eleanor’s medication each night.
The plan outlined a six-month decline.
Increase sedatives gradually.
Limit outside contact.
Record emotional outbursts.
Obtain physician certification.
Trigger public incident.
File emergency guardianship.
The welcome gala was the public incident.
Vanessa intended Eleanor to become agitated in front of witnesses.
The collar was not planned.
The attempted slap was not planned.
Her arrogance had exposed a careful operation.
Detective Ortiz turned another page.
Evening Bell included a final phase.
If guardianship was challenged, Eleanor would be transferred to a private clinic overseas.
The transfer authorization had already been signed.
Eleanor’s signature was forged.
Alexander read the destination.
A rehabilitation estate in Switzerland.
The same company had faced allegations of isolating wealthy elderly patients from their families.
A flight was scheduled for the following evening.
Vanessa had planned to remove Eleanor before the court could reconsider.
