Chapter 9 - The Needle at the Hospital

Alexander reached Eleanor’s room before the nurse touched the IV line.
He caught her wrist.
The syringe fell onto the bed.
Hospital security officers entered seconds later.
The nurse claimed Dr. Vale ordered the injection.
Dr. Vale had been suspended.
The medication could have stopped Eleanor’s heart.
The nurse began crying during questioning.
She had accepted cash to administer what she believed was a routine sedative.
The instruction came through the hospital’s internal messaging system.
The account belonged to Dr. Vale.
The message originated from a laptop inside Sterling Palace.
Hale still had remote access.
Or Vanessa did.
Eleanor was moved to a secured medical floor.
Independent federal agents guarded the room.
The attempted poisoning transformed the investigation.
Prosecutors obtained warrants for Vanessa’s devices, homes, foundation office, and company accounts.
Her attorneys could no longer keep every act separate.
Detective Ortiz’s recovered footage connected the plan.
Emma sat near Eleanor’s bed with both hands bandaged.
Alexander stood at the window.
His mother looked between them.
“You both appear miserable.”
“We nearly lost evidence,” Emma said.
“You nearly lost your life.”
“So did Detective Ortiz.”
Eleanor looked toward Alexander.
“And you?”
“I stopped the nurse.”
“That was not my question.”
Alexander understood.
He sat near the foot of the bed.
“I trusted Vanessa.”
“You trusted convenience.”
“Yes.”
“You let her dismiss staff.”
“Yes.”
“You let her control my doctors.”
“Yes.”
“You called me difficult when I questioned her.”
“Yes.”
Eleanor’s voice weakened.
“Why?”
“Because every disagreement arrived while I was negotiating something else.”
“The merger.”
“The port acquisition.”
“The Singapore contract.”
“I kept telling myself I would examine the problem when business became quieter.”
“Business never becomes quieter.”
“No.”
Emma listened.
The conversation did not end with an embrace.
Accountability rarely resolved itself inside one apology.
Eleanor looked toward Emma.
“Do not allow him to turn regret into authority over your future.”
Alexander’s face tightened.
“She is right,” he said.
Emma looked at him.
“I know.”
He almost smiled.
A federal agent entered.
Vanessa Croft had disappeared from her townhouse ten minutes before the search warrant arrived.
Her passport remained in the safe.
Her private jet had not moved.
Her driver was missing.
The gala recordings revealed an older escape route.
A service tunnel connected Sterling Palace to a boathouse below the cliffs.
A vessel left the cove during the cellar fire.
Coast Guard radar tracked it toward a private island owned by the Croft Foundation.
The island held an abandoned rehabilitation retreat.
Vanessa had sent several elderly relatives there over the years.
None had returned to public life.
Agent Ortiz looked toward Eleanor.
“She may be destroying records.”
Eleanor shook her head.
“She is collecting people.”
May you like
“Who?”
“Anyone who can prove what she did before me.”
