Chapter 2 - THE PENDANT NEVER STOPPED LISTENINGThe medical team treated me in a secure guest suite on the east side of the manor.

My father remained near the window while a doctor examined my injuries.

He did not ask me to describe what had happened.

He already knew.

The sapphire pendant had transmitted every sound to Vale Dominion’s encrypted servers.

Nathan’s counting.

Celeste’s laughter.

My request for the phone.

Nathan’s admission that he had disabled the cameras and dismissed the staff.

Every word had been stored with timestamps that could not be altered.

When the doctor finished, she told me I needed hospital observation.

“I’ll go after I speak with Agent Sloan,” I said.

My father turned from the window.

“You have already done enough.”

“No.”

I pulled his coat more tightly around my shoulders.

“I stayed because I wanted to finish this.”

“You stayed because I taught you to wait for a man to reveal himself.”

Regret entered his voice.

“I never imagined you would remain after he became dangerous.”

“You told me the evidence had to be complete.”

“I told you that before I knew he had pushed you down a staircase.”

I looked away.

Dad had learned about that incident only after accessing the hospital records three weeks later.

By then, I had already returned to Blackthorn Manor.

I had assured him I could manage Nathan.

It had been partly true.

I had managed to keep collecting evidence.

I had not managed to protect myself.

A knock sounded at the door.

Agent Sloan entered carrying a sealed plastic evidence bag.

Inside it was the pendant.

“Your device recorded clearly,” she said.

“His defense team will challenge it, but the transmission records establish authenticity.”

“What was in the safe?”

Her expression changed.

“Ledgers, foreign account keys, burner phones, and photographs of private meetings.”

My father stepped closer.

“Names?”

“Judges, customs officers, port officials, corporate auditors, and two members of Ashford Global’s board.”

I had expected corruption.

I had not expected the network to reach so far.

Agent Sloan placed another bag on the table.

Inside was Nathan’s phone.

“His messages confirm that Celeste coordinated payments through a consulting company called Monroe Strategic Advisory.”

“That company has no employees,” I said.

“It was created to receive money.”

“We know.”

Agent Sloan studied me.

“Your husband transferred forty-eight million dollars through it over three years.”

Nathan had told the board that Celeste’s firm specialized in complex international negotiations.

In reality, it existed only on paper.

Every consultation fee had been another transfer into accounts they controlled.

“Did you find the Ivory List?” I asked.

My father looked at me.

Agent Sloan did the same.

“What is that?”

“I heard Nathan mention it twice.”

I pushed myself upright.

“He said the Ivory List was his insurance policy.”

“Where?”

“The first time was in his office.”

“The second was during a call with Celeste.”

“He said if the company ever turned against him, everyone on the Ivory List would fall with him.”

Agent Sloan immediately called her team.

While she spoke, shouting erupted downstairs.

A moment later, an officer appeared at the door.

“Celeste Monroe attempted to destroy evidence.”

“What did she do?” Sloan asked.

“She grabbed a phone from one of the evidence tables and threw it into the fireplace.”

“Was it recovered?”

“Yes.”

“Whose phone?”

The officer hesitated.

“It wasn’t Ashford’s.”

“It was hers.”

Agent Sloan left the room at once.

I followed despite my father’s objection.

When we reached the grand hall, Celeste stood between two officers.

Her perfect hair had fallen across her face.

The calm woman in the white chair had disappeared.

“You don’t understand,” she said.

“That phone contains private material.”

Agent Sloan put on gloves and examined the damaged device.

“The memory unit appears intact.”

Celeste’s eyes found mine.

For the first time, she looked afraid of me rather than amused.

“You think you won,” she said.

“You have no idea what your father has done.”

My father stopped beside me.

“What are you talking about?”

Celeste smiled through her panic.

“Nathan wasn’t the only person using her.”

She nodded toward me.

“Ask Elias why Ashford Global was permitted to steal money from his daughter for four years.”

The officers pulled her away.

Her accusation remained in the room after she was gone.

I looked at my father.

May you like

He did not deny it.

And that silence frightened me more than anything Nathan had said that night.
