Chapter 8 - THE DAUGHTER UNDER SURVEILLANCEMy father did not deny the reports.

He came to Jordan’s office alone.
No attorneys.
No security team.
He placed his phone on the table and sat across from me.
“Your grandfather created the succession program,” he said.
“He believed wealth destroyed people who received it without being tested.”
“So he monitored his children.”
“And his grandchildren.”
“He called it preparation.”
“I call it surveillance.”
“I ended most of the program after his death.”
“Most?”
Dad looked at the file between us.
“I continued security monitoring after threats were made against our family.”
“These reports discuss my friendships.”
“They discuss whether people approached you for money.”
“They discuss my teachers.”
“They discuss the first person I dated.”
“I know.”
“They discuss whether I was emotionally suitable to control my own inheritance.”
His shoulders lowered.
“I know.”
For the first time, Elias Vale did not appear powerful.
He looked like a father facing the consequences of confusing protection with ownership.
“Did you choose Nathan for me?” I asked.
“No.”
“Did you allow the relationship because you wanted to study him?”
“I allowed myself to believe I could monitor the risk.”
“That is not what I asked.”
He took a long breath.
“Yes.”
The answer hurt more than I expected.
“I thought that if Nathan loved you when he believed you were ordinary, then perhaps he was different from the people who had pursued our family for influence.”
“And when he began changing?”
“I saw ambition.”
“I saw arrogance.”
“I did not see the full cruelty until it was too late.”
“You always saw what data could show you.”
I closed the file.
“You never saw me.”
Dad did not defend himself.
That made the conversation harder, not easier.
“I am resigning as trustee of your assets,” he said.
“All restrictions will be removed.”
“You should have done that years ago.”
“Yes.”
“I am also ordering the destruction of every personal surveillance record not required for the criminal case.”
“No.”
He looked surprised.
“Transfer them to me.”
“Madeline—”
“They are records of my life.”
“I decide what happens to them.”
He nodded slowly.
“All right.”
I also demanded an independent audit of Vale Dominion.
If Martin’s archive exposed wrongdoing, it would not be hidden to protect my father’s reputation.
Dad agreed.
Before leaving, he stopped at the door.
“I taught you never to reveal your power to a man.”
He looked back at me.
“I should have taught you that no one who truly loves you will require you to hide who you are.”
After he left, Agent Sloan called.
Martin Keene had agreed to cooperate.
He claimed Nathan ordered the forged signatures and bribery payments.
He also claimed Celeste designed the plan to have me declared legally incapable.
In exchange for protection, Martin offered information about an operation scheduled for three days later.
A cargo ship owned by Ashford Global was approaching the eastern coast.
Its manifest listed industrial machinery.
Martin said the containers actually held records, cash, and restricted technology purchased through stolen contracts.
Nathan had arranged the shipment months earlier.
If authorities seized it, the financial conspiracy would become an international criminal case.
But there was a problem.
The ship’s route had changed.
It was no longer approaching an official port.
It was moving toward a privately owned terminal.
A terminal controlled through one of my trusts.

Nathan had positioned the evidence on my property.
Even from a jail cell, he was still trying to make me responsible.
