Chapter 9 - THE SHIP WITH MY NAME ON ITThe terminal was called Vale Meridian.

I had never visited it.

According to the trust documents, I had become its controlling owner on my twenty-fifth birthday.

My digital signature appeared on every renewal and operating license.

Those signatures were genuine.

Years earlier, my father’s attorneys had included the terminal among hundreds of documents I approved without explanation.

I had trusted them.

Nathan later discovered the asset and used its warehouses without telling me.

Now a ship carrying illegal cargo was sailing directly toward property bearing my name.

Jordan requested an emergency court order transferring control of the terminal to federal authorities.

Nathan’s attorneys fought the motion.

They argued that I had personally approved the terminal’s operations.

They released photographs of me touring an Ashford Global warehouse.

The warehouse was not Vale Meridian.

But the public could not tell the difference.

Once again, Nathan did not need to prove his story.

He only needed to create doubt.

Agent Sloan coordinated with the Coast Guard and international investigators.

The ship ignored two orders to stop.

Its tracking system went dark fifty miles from shore.

For six hours, no one knew where it was.

Then an emergency signal appeared near an abandoned industrial pier.

The crew had left the vessel.

Several containers were missing.

Security footage showed trucks leaving the pier before authorities arrived.

One truck was later found empty.

Another crossed state lines using false plates.

The third disappeared.

Martin Keene told investigators the missing container contained the physical Ivory Ledger.

The documents recovered at Blackthorn were copies.

The physical ledger included handwritten payment authorizations, fingerprints, and original account codes.

Without it, dozens of people connected to Nathan might escape prosecution.

I examined the pier footage with Hannah.

The video showed six masked workers moving the container.

A seventh person remained near the lead truck.

He wore a dark coat and walked with a slight limp.

“I know that man,” Hannah said.

“Who?”

“Graham Pike.”

Nathan’s private security director.

Graham had supervised Blackthorn Manor for three years.

He controlled the staff schedules.

He had dismissed everyone before the assault.

He had also declared the security cameras offline.

But Graham had vanished before the federal raid.

“He arranged the trucks,” I said.

“And he knows every entrance to the manor,” Hannah replied.

My phone rang.

The call came from Blackthorn’s restored security system.

A motion alarm had activated in the west wing.

Federal teams had completed their search and reduced the number of officers on the estate.

Someone had entered through an old service tunnel beneath the gardens.

I called Agent Sloan.

She ordered local units to surround the property.

Then a photograph arrived on my phone.

It showed the grand hall.

A white leather chair stood beneath the chandelier.

On the seat was the Ivory Ledger.

A message followed.

COME ALONE IF YOU WANT YOUR NAME CLEARED.

Jordan immediately told me not to respond.

Agent Sloan said the message was a trap.

My father offered to send Vale security officers.

I refused all of them.

“I’m not going alone,” I said.

“But whoever sent this must believe I am.”

We prepared a controlled operation.

A transmitter was hidden beneath my jacket.

Agents entered the estate through the forest and service roads.

I approached the main doors in a single vehicle.

Blackthorn Manor looked different in daylight.

Smaller.

Colder.

No longer magical.

I stepped into the grand hall.

The Ivory Ledger remained on the chair.

Graham Pike emerged from behind a stone column.

He was not alone.

Celeste walked beside him.

She had been released under restricted supervision after agreeing to cooperate.

The tracking bracelet around her ankle had been cut away.

She smiled at my surprise.

“You destroyed my life,” she said.

May you like

Then she raised Nathan’s braided whip from the table.

“Now you are going to help me rebuild it.”
