Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN WHO STOLE MY FILESHannah had been found at a roadside motel almost two hundred miles from Blackthorn Manor.

She had checked in under a false name.
Federal agents brought her to a secure interview facility while I remained under medical supervision.
Jordan objected to me leaving the hospital.
I refused to let Hannah face the situation alone.
By evening, I sat across from her in a plain room with gray walls.
Hannah looked exhausted.
She had lost weight.
Her hands would not stop shaking.
“I’m sorry,” she said as soon as the door closed.
“You took my laptop.”
“I had to.”
“You could have come to me.”
“No.”
Her answer was immediate.
“They were watching you.”
“Who?”
“Martin Keene.”
“The security director.”
“Two people from the finance department.”
She looked toward the observation window.
“And Celeste.”
Hannah explained that she had discovered forged transfer documents six months earlier.
When she questioned the signatures, Martin ordered her to remain silent.
Later that night, someone entered her apartment.
Nothing had been stolen.
But every photograph on her bedroom wall had been turned face down.
“It was a warning,” she said.
“I began copying files.”
“Why didn’t you contact the police?”
“Martin showed me a list of officers receiving payments from Ashford Global.”
“The Ivory List?”
She nodded.
“It included prosecutors, inspectors, and government contractors.”
“I didn’t know who was safe.”
“So you tried to contact my father.”
“I found the number on the wedding photograph.”
“Before I could call, Celeste discovered that I had copied the records.”
Hannah opened the blue case.
Inside were my missing laptop and three drives.
She had not stolen them for Nathan.
She had saved them from destruction.
Agent Sloan’s forensic technicians began examining the laptop immediately.
Within an hour, they found the signing software.
Nathan’s administrator account had accessed it repeatedly while I was away from home.
The forged documents carried hidden creation data linked to Martin Keene’s office computer.
My signature had been copied.
The conspiracy had tried to make me responsible for the money Nathan and Celeste had stolen.
Hannah also produced audio recordings from executive meetings.
In one, Nathan ordered Martin to prepare “marital authorization documents.”
In another, Celeste laughed about turning me into the “perfect legal shield.”
Jordan placed both hands flat on the table.
“This clears Madeline.”
“It does more than that,” Agent Sloan said.
“It proves premeditated financial fraud.”
Hannah began crying.
“There is another recording.”
She removed a small memory card from the lining of her handbag.
“I didn’t understand it at first.”
The technicians loaded the file.
Nathan’s voice filled the room.
He was speaking with someone whose voice I did not recognize.
“The Vale woman becomes a problem only if she remembers who she is.”
The unknown man answered.
“Then keep her isolated.”
Nathan laughed.
“I already have.”
The conversation continued.
Nathan discussed increasing my medication after the staircase incident.
He wanted doctors to believe I was unstable.
He planned to seek control over my trusts once my mental competence was questioned.
The next voice belonged to Celeste.
“When do I get Blackthorn?”
“When Madeline is declared incapable.”
“And if she fights?”
Nathan’s answer was quiet.
“She won’t be in a condition to fight.”
The recording ended.
No one spoke.
The two hundred lashes had not been a sudden explosion of cruelty.
They were part of a larger plan.
Nathan wanted my assets.
He wanted legal control of my identity.
And he had already begun preparing the paperwork to erase me from my own life.
Agent Sloan’s phone rang.
This time, she activated the speaker.
A surveillance officer reported that Nathan had been released temporarily while prosecutors finalized the financial charges.
He had left the federal building through a private exit.
His attorney claimed he was going to a medical clinic.
May you like
But Nathan’s vehicle was traveling in the opposite direction.
It was heading toward the home of the doctor who had declared me emotionally unstable after the staircase fall.
