Chapter 1: The Voice That Should Have Been Gone

The rain came down in relentless sheets, drumming against the enormous windows of Castillo Manor as if the storm itself demanded to be heard.

Alejandro Castillo barely noticed.

Three years.

Three years of airports, police stations, anonymous tips, endless interviews, and sleepless nights had hollowed him into someone he barely recognized. Every investigator had eventually delivered the same verdict.

"No trace."

"She probably left voluntarily."

"You need to let her go."

But Alejandro had never believed them.

Elena would never leave without a word.

She would never abandon him.

Especially not after promising, only hours before she disappeared, that they would finally begin the family they had dreamed about since college.

He still remembered every detail of that evening.

The smell of jasmine in her hair.

The small diamond bracelet he had clasped around her wrist.

The laugh that echoed through the garden as she teased him for working too much.

Then...

Nothing.

One moment she was there.

The next...

She had vanished.

No ransom.

No body.

No explanation.

Only silence.

It had nearly destroyed him.

The massive front doors opened with a deep groan.

Cold wind swept through the marble foyer as Alejandro stepped inside, his tailored black coat soaked from the storm.

The servants immediately lined both sides of the entrance.

No one spoke.

No one dared.

Since Elena disappeared, the mansion had become quieter every year.

The warmth had disappeared with her.

Only routine remained.

Alejandro handed his coat to the butler.

"Any updates?"

The old man lowered his head.

"No, sir."

Alejandro nodded once.

Exactly the answer he expected.

He started walking toward the grand staircase.

Then—

A frightened female voice echoed from the west hallway.

"I'm so sorry, sir..."

A bucket tipped over.

Water rushed across the polished marble floor.

The sound of metal striking stone echoed through the mansion.

Alejandro froze.

Every muscle in his body locked.

His heartbeat stopped.

That voice.

Impossible.

Slowly...

Very slowly...

He turned.

A young woman in a faded gray maid's uniform had fallen to her knees beside the overturned bucket.

Her long dark hair concealed her face.

Bare feet rested on the cold marble.

Thin hands shook violently as she reached for the mop.

"I'm sorry," she whispered again.

"I'll clean it immediately."

Alejandro couldn't breathe.

His vision blurred.

That voice...

It wasn't similar.

It wasn't familiar.

It was hers.

His feet moved before his mind could stop them.

One step.

Another.

The maid sensed someone standing over her.

She slowly lifted her head.

Time stopped.

Alejandro felt the world disappear.

The scar beneath her chin.

The tiny freckle beside her left eye.

The deep emerald eyes he had searched for in every crowd across three continents.

"Elena..."

The whisper escaped his lips before he realized he had spoken.

The bucket slipped from her trembling fingers.

It struck the floor with a deafening crash.

Her eyes widened.

For one brief second...

Recognition flashed across her face.

Then terror swallowed it.

She immediately lowered her head.

"I'm sorry, sir."

"My name is Emily."

Alejandro stared at her.

"No."

His voice cracked.

"No..."

He knelt in front of her.

His hands shook as he gently touched her cheek.

"You don't have to hide."

"It's me."

"It's Alejandro."

She flinched violently.

As though human touch itself had become frightening.

"Please..."

"I'm only a maid."

"You've mistaken me for someone else."

Alejandro felt his chest tighten.

The woman before him looked thinner.

Far thinner.

Her wrists were fragile.

Her skin had lost its healthy glow.

A faint scar crossed the side of her neck.

Then he noticed something else.

Dark purple bruises circled both wrists.

Old bruises.

New bruises.

Bruises layered upon bruises.

Someone had been hurting her.

For a long time.

"What happened to you?"

She didn't answer.

Instead...

She looked toward the staircase.

Not at Alejandro.

Past him.

Toward someone else.

The temperature inside the mansion suddenly seemed to drop.

A slow clap echoed through the hall.

Every servant stiffened.

Alejandro turned.

Standing halfway down the grand staircase was Vivian Moretti.

Elegant.

Perfectly composed.

A crystal wine glass rested casually in one hand.

She wore a silk emerald dress that shimmered beneath the chandelier.

A smile curved across her lips.

"So..."

she said softly,

"I suppose introductions are overdue."

Alejandro stood.

His expression hardened instantly.

"What is she doing here?"

Vivian tilted her head.

"You mean Emily?"

"Our newest housemaid."

Alejandro's eyes narrowed.

"I asked about my wife."

Vivian laughed.

A light, amused laugh.

"Your wife disappeared three years ago."

"You know that better than anyone."

She slowly descended another step.

"If this poor girl reminds you of Elena..."

"I'm afraid grief has become dangerous."

Alejandro didn't take his eyes off Elena.

"Look at me."

She didn't.

"Elena."

Nothing.

Her hands trembled so badly she could barely hold the mop.

Vivian sighed dramatically.

"See?"

"She doesn't even know you."

Alejandro suddenly reached for Elena's wrist.

She gasped.

The sleeve slid upward.

Everyone in the room inhaled sharply.

Fresh bruises.

Deep finger-shaped marks.

Healing cuts.

Burn scars.

Alejandro's face drained of color.

"Who did this?"

Silence.

Vivian answered before Elena could.

"The poor girl had an abusive husband."

"Very tragic."

Alejandro slowly looked at Vivian.

His instincts screamed.

She was lying.

Every servant in the mansion avoided eye contact.

Not one person dared breathe.

Fear hung in the air like smoke.

Alejandro had spent years negotiating billion-dollar acquisitions.

He knew exactly what terror looked like.

This wasn't respect.

This was control.

He scanned the room.

The gardener stared at the floor.

The cook gripped her apron until her knuckles turned white.

Even the security guards looked uncomfortable.

Every single person was afraid of Vivian.

Why?

Vivian smiled sweetly.

"Darling..."

"You've had a very stressful day."

"Why don't I have someone prepare dinner?"

The word darling felt poisonous.

Alejandro remembered.

He had never once introduced Vivian as anything more than a business consultant.

Yet somehow...

Over the past three years...

She had moved into his mansion.

Taken over household operations.

Managed staff.

Controlled finances.

Chosen who entered the estate.

How had he allowed that?

Grief.

He had been drowning in it.

Vivian had handled everything while he searched the world for Elena.

Or so he thought.

Suddenly...

The elderly butler cleared his throat.

Very quietly.

Almost too quietly to notice.

Alejandro looked at him.

The old man subtly glanced toward the east corridor.

Only for a second.

Then lowered his eyes.

It wasn't random.

It was a message.

Alejandro understood immediately.

There was something hidden there.

Something the butler couldn't reveal openly.

Because someone was watching.

Vivian.

Alejandro reached into his pocket.

Pulled out his phone.

Vivian's smile faltered.

"Alejandro..."

"What are you doing?"

He ignored her.

Instead...

He dialed a number known by only three people in the world.

The call connected instantly.

"This is Marcus."

Alejandro's voice became ice.

"Freeze every financial account connected to Vivian Moretti."

Pause.

"Every company."

"Every trust."

"Every offshore holding."

Marcus didn't ask why.

"When?"

Alejandro looked directly into Vivian's widening eyes.

"Now."

Vivian's wine glass slipped from her fingers.

It shattered across the marble floor.

"Alejandro..."

"You can't be serious."

He didn't blink.

"Lock every exit."

"No one leaves this mansion."

The security guards hesitated.

They instinctively looked toward Vivian.

Not Alejandro.

That told him everything he needed to know.

His own employees...

Were waiting for her orders.

Not his.

The realization hit him like a bullet.

Vivian hadn't merely entered his life after Elena disappeared.

She had taken control of it.

Behind him...

Elena whispered so softly that only Alejandro could hear.

"They'll kill you..."

Before he could answer...

The lights throughout the mansion suddenly went out.

Complete darkness swallowed the estate.

Then somewhere beneath the floor...

A heavy steel door slammed shut.

And from deep below the mansion...

May you like

A woman's terrified scream echoed through the darkness.
