Chapter 9: The Bloodline Lie

The words echoed through the underground archive.
"I don't think Eduardo was ever your real father."
For several long seconds, Alejandro couldn't react.
He simply stared at Samuel.
Marcus was the first to break the silence.
"Explain."
Samuel swallowed hard.
"I've kept this secret for more than thirty years."
He looked at the bronze statue standing in the center of the chamber.
"The woman you're looking at..."
"...was Isabella Laurent."
"She wasn't Eduardo Castillo's wife."
"She was his research partner."
Alejandro frowned.
"My birth certificate says Eduardo is my father."
Samuel nodded sadly.
"That's exactly what Project Mirror wanted the world to believe."
The Founder Archive
Elena slowly approached the bronze statue.
At its base was a brass plaque.
Dr. Isabella Laurent
Neuroscientist
Founder of the Human Identity Preservation Initiative
Dates.
Awards.
Patents.
None of it mentioned Eduardo.
Grace stared in disbelief.
"She created the original research."
Marcus looked around the chamber.
"So Eduardo stole it."
Samuel nodded.
"After Isabella disappeared..."
"He renamed everything."
"He became the founder."
"He erased her from history."
Elena whispered,
"He didn't just steal companies..."
"He stole lives."
Isabella's Last Recording
A hidden projector suddenly activated.
The room dimmed.
A holographic image flickered to life.
A woman in her forties appeared.
Elegant.
Intelligent.
Her eyes looked remarkably familiar.
Alejandro froze.
He had seen those eyes before.
In the mirror.
The woman smiled gently.
"If this recording has activated..."
"...then Project Mirror has already fallen."
She looked directly into the camera.
"My name is Dr. Isabella Laurent."
"I designed memory reconstruction to help patients suffering from severe brain injuries."
"I never intended it to erase identities."
Her smile disappeared.
"Eduardo changed everything."
"He weaponized my life's work."
"He murdered my colleagues."
"He imprisoned those who opposed him."
She closed her eyes briefly.
"If my son is watching this..."
Alejandro stopped breathing.
"...know that I loved you every day we were apart."
Tears filled his eyes.
The recording continued.
"Eduardo took you from me when you were three years old."
"He changed your name."
"He told the world I had abandoned you."
"He told you I had died."
Alejandro's knees nearly gave out.
Everything he believed about his childhood...
Was a lie.
Elena Remembers the Night
Watching Isabella's face triggered another memory.
Elena suddenly gasped.
"I remember now."
Everyone turned toward her.
"The night I disappeared..."
"I wasn't following Vivian."
"I was following Eduardo."
Flashbacks flooded her mind.
A hidden study.
A fireplace opening.
An elevator descending beneath the mansion.
Eduardo meeting Vivian.
One sentence echoed clearly.
"We're almost ready."
"The heir has proven himself."
Alejandro frowned.
"The heir?"
Elena looked at him.
"They were talking about you."
The Final Phase
Grace searched another cabinet.
Inside she found dozens of confidential reports.
Each stamped:
Phase Seven
Marcus opened one.
His expression darkened.
"This wasn't just about replacing influential people."
He read aloud.
Objective: Prepare Subject A for Founder Integration.
Alejandro asked,
"Who's Subject A?"
Grace slowly turned another page.
A photograph stared back at them.
Alejandro.
Taken only six months ago.
Without his knowledge.
He felt a chill run down his spine.
"They've been watching me."
Marcus corrected him.
"They've been preparing you."
Eduardo's Real Plan
Another video automatically began.
Eduardo appeared once more.
Older.
Calm.
Composed.
"If you've reached this point..."
"...then you've learned enough."
He smiled.
"You still believe Project Mirror was about replacing powerful people."
"It wasn't."
"It was about immortality."
Grace stared at the screen.
"What?"
Eduardo continued.
"The body fails."
"The mind does not."
"Our memories..."
"Our decisions..."
"Our identities..."
"They can all be transferred."
Alejandro slowly understood.
Project Mirror had never been about impersonation.
It was about preserving consciousness.
Eduardo looked directly into the camera.
"I no longer need this aging body."
"I've spent twenty years preparing the perfect successor."
The next sentence made everyone freeze.
"My son."
The Chamber Below
A loud mechanical sound echoed through the archive.
The bronze statue slowly rotated.
Behind it...
Another staircase appeared.
Unlike the concrete prison above...
This staircase was carved from polished black stone.
Warm light glowed from below.
Marcus checked the countdown.
17:12
"We're running out of time."
Alejandro nodded.
"We finish this now."
Vivian's Survival
Hundreds of miles away...
The damaged helicopter spiraled toward the coastline.
Vivian wrestled the pistol away from the co-pilot.
The weapon discharged.
The windshield shattered.
The aircraft slammed into the ocean with tremendous force.
Water flooded the cabin.
Vivian barely escaped before it sank beneath the waves.
She struggled onto a rocky shoreline.
Bruised.
Bleeding.
Alive.
She looked toward the distant horizon.
Eduardo had betrayed her.
She whispered through gritted teeth,
"If I'm disposable..."
"...so are you."
For the first time in years...
Vivian chose a side.
Not because she had become good.
Because revenge was stronger than loyalty.
The Laboratory
Alejandro led the team down the hidden staircase.
The room at the bottom looked decades ahead of its time.
Transparent computer displays floated above polished steel consoles.
Rows of medical pods lined the walls.
Only one remained active.
Inside...
Lay an elderly man connected to countless machines.
His breathing was slow.
His eyes closed.
Marcus stared.
"That's Eduardo."
Alejandro looked at the monitor.
Vital signs.
Brain activity.
Life support.
Then he slowly turned toward the enormous screen controlling the room.
A message appeared.
CONSCIOUSNESS TRANSFER
Status: 94% Complete
Grace whispered,
"Oh my God..."
Eduardo hadn't escaped.
His body had never left the facility.
The man speaking through the videos...
The man commanding Project Mirror...
Was operating remotely through a sophisticated AI-assisted communication system while his failing body remained hidden below the mansion.
Suddenly...
The old man's eyes opened.
He looked directly at Alejandro.
Despite being connected to life support...
He smiled.
"I've been waiting for you..."
"My son."
The countdown reached:
16:03
May you like
And every medical pod in the laboratory suddenly began opening.
