Chapter 10: The Choice Between Power and Love

The transparent medical pods hissed open one after another.

Cold vapor rolled across the laboratory floor.

Marcus instinctively raised his rifle.

Every Castillo Security agent formed a protective circle around Alejandro and Elena.

No one knew what was inside the pods.

For several agonizing seconds...

Nothing happened.

Then...

A man stepped out of the first chamber.

He looked almost identical to Alejandro.

The same dark hair.

The same height.

The same sharp jawline.

Only his eyes were different.

They were empty.

Emotionless.

Like a machine waiting for instructions.

Then another pod opened.

Another Alejandro.

Then another.

One after another...

Twelve identical men emerged from the laboratory.

Silence filled the room.

Grace whispered,

"...They're all clones?"

Eduardo smiled weakly from his life-support chamber.

"Not clones."

"Candidates."

The Successor Program

The enormous screen behind Eduardo came alive.

A timeline appeared.

PROJECT MIRROR

PHASE I – Identity Replacement

PHASE II – Memory Transfer

PHASE III – Successor Program

Alejandro stared at the final phase.

Eduardo spoke calmly.

"The world depends too much on individuals."

"When one leader dies..."

"Entire nations collapse."

Marcus interrupted.

"So you manufactured replacements."

Eduardo nodded.

"I manufactured continuity."

He looked proudly toward the twelve men.

"Each one carries fragments of your education."

"Your speech patterns."

"Your leadership profile."

"They've spent years becoming you."

Alejandro looked into the eyes of the nearest candidate.

There was no hatred.

No kindness.

Only obedience.

Elena's Missing Memory

Suddenly Elena clutched her head.

A sharp flash returned.

The laboratory.

Three years earlier.

She remembered standing exactly where she stood now.

Eduardo had shown her the first prototype.

He had smiled proudly.

"One day..."

"No one important will ever truly die."

Elena had answered,

"This isn't medicine."

"This is slavery."

Eduardo's smile disappeared.

"You see morality."

"I see evolution."

She remembered turning to run.

Then...

Vivian had struck her from behind.

The memory ended.

Tears rolled down Elena's face.

"I remember everything."

Alejandro gently held her hand.

She squeezed it tightly.

"I never forgot loving you."

"I only forgot your name."

The Countdown

Marcus looked at his watch.

12:41

The explosive timer continued ticking.

His radio crackled.

"Sir!"

"We've evacuated twenty-seven prisoners."

"What about the rest?"

"We're still searching Level Two."

Samuel suddenly shouted.

"The west tunnels!"

"They're flooding!"

A nearby monitor displayed live security footage.

Underground pipes had burst.

Water rushed into several prison corridors.

The remaining prisoners were trapped.

Marcus immediately turned toward his team.

"Rescue Unit Three!"

"With me!"

Half the agents sprinted toward the tunnels.

Alejandro started after them.

Eduardo's voice stopped him.

"If you leave now..."

"You'll never know the truth."

Alejandro didn't even turn around.

"The truth has already cost enough lives."

Vivian Returns

Above the estate...

A black SUV crashed through the broken front gates.

Marcus's outside security team immediately surrounded it.

Weapons drawn.

The driver's door slowly opened.

Vivian stepped out.

Her clothes were soaked.

Blood trickled down one side of her face.

She raised both empty hands.

"I'm surrendering."

Nobody lowered their weapons.

One guard demanded,

"Why?"

Vivian looked toward the burning mansion.

"Because Eduardo lied to everyone."

Including me.

The Laboratory Awakens

Back underground...

Warning lights suddenly turned blue.

A computerized voice echoed through the room.

Memory Transfer Sequence Initiated.

Eduardo smiled.

"Perfect timing."

The monitors displayed Alejandro's face.

His medical history.

Brain scans.

Psychological evaluations.

Then another file appeared.

Compatibility: 99.8%

Grace gasped.

"They've been preparing to transfer Eduardo's memories into Alejandro."

Alejandro finally understood.

Project Mirror had never intended to replace him.

It intended to erase him.

His body...

Would become Eduardo's next life.

Eduardo looked directly at him.

"I gave you everything."

"My fortune."

"My name."

"My empire."

Alejandro answered quietly,

"You gave me lies."

Isabella's Final Gift

As the laboratory systems powered up...

Another hidden compartment opened beneath Isabella's statue.

Inside lay a small wooden box.

Elena picked it up.

On the lid...

Only three words.

For My Son

Alejandro slowly opened it.

Inside rested an old silver pocket watch.

A faded photograph.

And one cassette tape.

Marcus frowned.

"A cassette?"

Samuel smiled sadly.

"She didn't trust digital records."

Grace found an old tape player inside the laboratory.

She pressed PLAY.

Static filled the room.

Then Isabella's voice emerged.

"My sweet boy..."

"If you've reached this recording..."

"Then Eduardo has finally revealed himself."

Alejandro closed his eyes.

For the first time...

He was hearing his real mother's voice.

She continued.

"Listen carefully."

"Eduardo believes memory creates identity."

"He is wrong."

A pause.

Then:

"Identity is created by choice."

"No machine can transfer love."

"No experiment can manufacture compassion."

"The man you become..."

"...will always be your own decision."

Alejandro felt tears streaming down his face.

The message ended with six simple words.

"I'm already proud of you."

The Final Offer

Eduardo slowly removed his oxygen mask.

His breathing was weak.

Painful.

Yet his eyes remained sharp.

"You still have time."

He extended one trembling hand toward Alejandro.

"Take my place."

"Rule what I built."

"Save civilization."

Alejandro walked forward.

Marcus tensed.

Everyone expected a confrontation.

Instead...

Alejandro knelt beside the hospital bed.

For one brief moment...

He looked at the man who had raised him.

The man who had taught him business.

Who had attended his school plays.

Who had celebrated his birthdays.

Despite everything...

There had once been genuine moments between them.

Eduardo smiled.

"I knew you'd understand."

Alejandro slowly reached toward the life-support console.

Eduardo relaxed.

Then...

Alejandro pressed the large red emergency shutdown switch.

Every machine in the laboratory went silent.

The ventilator stopped.

The monitors went dark.

Eduardo looked at him in disbelief.

His final words were barely audible.

"You..."

"...chose..."

Alejandro nodded.

"I chose humanity."

Eduardo exhaled one final breath.

The founder of Project Mirror was gone.

For real this time.

But before anyone could react...

Every computer in the laboratory flashed bright red.

A new warning appeared.

FOUNDER DECEASED

SELF-DESTRUCTION PROTOCOL IRREVERSIBLE

The countdown instantly dropped from twelve minutes...

To five.

Marcus looked at Alejandro.

"We're out of time."

Far below the laboratory...

A deafening explosion shook the foundation of Castillo Manor.

The first support column had collapsed.
