Chapter 5: The Journal of the Forgotten Wife

The photograph slipped from Alejandro's trembling fingers.

It landed beside Elena's wedding ring.

For several seconds, he couldn't breathe.

The smiling woman in the picture was unmistakably Elena.

Standing beside her was Vivian Moretti.

Neither of them looked frightened.

Neither of them looked like enemies.

Instead...

They looked like friends.

Elena slowly stepped forward.

Her eyes fixed on the photograph.

"I..."

"I know this picture."

A sharp pain exploded through her head.

She grabbed the side of her face.

Another memory surfaced.

Six Months Before the Disappearance

Sunlight poured across the Castillo Foundation's rooftop garden.

Elena laughed as Vivian handed her a cup of coffee.

"You work too hard," Vivian said warmly.

"So do you."

The two women smiled.

Vivian had only joined the foundation a few months earlier.

She was brilliant.

Charming.

Highly educated.

She specialized in forensic accounting and corporate security.

Alejandro trusted her immediately.

So did Elena.

"I've never had a sister," Vivian had once confessed.

"But if I did..."

"I'd want her to be like you."

Elena believed every word.

The memory shattered.

Elena gasped for air.

"She wasn't always like this..."

Alejandro looked at her.

"You trusted her."

Tears rolled down Elena's face.

"I brought her into our lives."

Samuel carefully picked up the leather journal.

His weathered hands shook.

"This belonged to Mrs. Castillo."

Alejandro accepted it carefully.

The cover was worn.

Water-damaged.

The corners were stained.

As though someone had tried to destroy it.

Inside the first page...

Only one sentence had been written.

If you're reading this... I failed.

Alejandro's heart stopped.

He turned the page.

The handwriting was unmistakably Elena's.

March 4

Vivian saved the foundation today.

She discovered nearly twelve million dollars hidden through fake invoices before anyone else noticed.

Alejandro says she's the smartest financial investigator he's ever met.

I think he's right.

Maybe we're finally becoming a family.

Alejandro closed his eyes.

Everything had begun with trust.

Another page.

April 18

Something strange happened.

Vivian asked unusual questions about our wills.

About inheritance.

About company voting rights.

She laughed afterward and said she was only curious.

But I don't know...

Something felt wrong.

Alejandro frowned.

He had never seen this journal.

Why hadn't Elena shown him?

Another page.

May 2

I found Vivian inside our private bedroom.

She claimed she was looking for financial files.

But she was standing beside our safe.

When she saw me...

She smiled.

Somehow that frightened me more than if she had panicked.

Elena suddenly whispered,

"I remember..."

Alejandro looked up.

"She asked where you kept your emergency signature seal."

Another flash.

Vivian smiling.

"Only in case something ever happens to Alejandro."

Elena had answered without hesitation.

She trusted her completely.

Alejandro felt sick.

His own wife had unknowingly handed Vivian the keys to his empire.

Marcus Arrives

The sound of rapid footsteps echoed down the underground corridor.

Weapons drawn.

Flashlights sweeping every corner.

Marcus Reed appeared first.

Former Army Ranger.

Now head of Castillo Executive Security.

The moment he saw Alejandro, he lowered his rifle.

Then his eyes found Elena.

For several seconds...

He couldn't speak.

Finally—

"Mrs. Castillo..."

His voice cracked.

"We never stopped looking."

Elena smiled weakly.

"I know."

Marcus blinked.

"No..."

"You don't."

He removed a folded photograph from his vest.

It was faded from being carried for years.

Alejandro looked at it.

His chest tightened.

It was Elena's missing-person flyer.

Marcus had kept it in his pocket every single day.

For three years.

"We searched forty-two countries."

Marcus said quietly.

"We emptied lakes."

"We checked hospitals."

"We opened anonymous graves."

His voice broke.

"We never imagined..."

"...she was here."

He looked around the underground prison.

"Beneath your own house."

The Secret Database

One of Marcus's technicians rushed into the control room.

"Sir."

"You need to see this."

He connected an encrypted hard drive recovered from the surveillance system.

Hundreds of folders appeared.

Thousands of files.

Each labeled with a code.

E-01.

E-02.

E-03.

...

E-17.

...

E-46.

Marcus stared.

"There are forty-six subjects."

Alejandro frowned.

"I've only seen a handful of cells."

The technician swallowed.

"There are multiple underground levels."

Silence filled the room.

This wasn't simply a hidden prison.

It was an entire underground complex.

The technician opened Elena's file.

Photographs appeared.

Medical reports.

Psychological evaluations.

Medication schedules.

Videos.

Every day...

For three years.

Alejandro felt physically ill.

Vivian hadn't merely imprisoned Elena.

She had documented every stage of breaking her.

One report read:

Subject E-17

Identity recognition: 94% erased.

Emotional attachment to spouse: declining.

Compliance level: acceptable.

New identity accepted: Emily.

Recommendation:

Continue isolation.

Alejandro slammed the keyboard so hard it shattered.

No one tried to stop him.

Another Name Appears

Marcus searched the remaining files.

Then he froze.

"Sir..."

Alejandro turned.

Marcus slowly rotated the monitor.

Subject E-31.

Name:

Harrison Keller.

Alejandro frowned.

"The head of security?"

Marcus nodded.

Status:

Deceased.

Replacement assigned.

Alejandro's eyes narrowed.

"The man upstairs..."

"...isn't Harrison."

Marcus looked horrified.

"He's been wearing Harrison's identity."

Another folder opened automatically.

Facial reconstruction.

Forged passport.

DNA replacement records.

Alejandro suddenly understood.

Vivian hadn't only stolen Elena's identity.

She had been replacing people.

One by one.

Anyone who stood in her way.

Elena's Final Memory

Elena's breathing became uneven.

She looked toward the far end of the control room.

"I remember the last night."

Everyone turned toward her.

Rain.

Just like tonight.

She had gone downstairs after hearing strange noises.

Vivian had been arguing with someone.

A man.

Elena couldn't see his face.

Only one sentence echoed in her memory.

"If Alejandro learns about Project Mirror..."

"...everything ends."

Project Mirror.

Marcus immediately searched the database.

One result appeared.

PROJECT MIRROR

Access Level:

Founder Only.

Password Protected.

The technician tried to bypass the encryption.

Access denied.

Again.

Denied.

Then suddenly...

The computer unlocked itself.

A message appeared across the screen.

Authentication Accepted

User Recognized:

ELENA CASTILLO

Everyone stared at Elena.

She hadn't touched the keyboard.

The system had recognized her automatically.

A hidden biometric scanner had identified her.

Another steel vault door deep inside the underground complex slowly unlocked with a thunderous rumble.

Marcus looked toward the newly opened corridor.

"What exactly..."

"...is Project Mirror?"

Before anyone could move...

A loud explosion shook the entire underground level.

Dust rained from the ceiling.

The lights flickered violently.

Marcus grabbed his radio.

"Report!"

A frightened voice answered through static.

"Sir!"

"Someone detonated explosives in the west tunnel!"

"They're trying to collapse the underground facility!"

Another explosion followed.

Concrete cracked overhead.

The ceiling began to split.

Elena stared into the darkness beyond the newly opened vault.

Her face turned pale.

"They're destroying the evidence..."

Then she whispered words that made every person in the room freeze.

May you like

"No..."

"They're trying to bury us alive."
