Chapter 12: The Last Sacrifice

The echo of the gunshot rolled through the old archive tunnel.

Alejandro stopped running.

His heart pounded harder than the explosions shaking the foundation above them.

"Elena!"

His voice disappeared into the collapsing corridors.

No answer.

Marcus grabbed his shoulder.

"The ceiling's coming down!"

Alejandro pulled free.

"I'm not leaving her."

He sprinted toward the sound.

Behind him, Marcus carried little Lucas while the remaining survivors struggled through the narrow passage.

The countdown continued.

01:31

01:30

Blood on the Floor

The tunnel opened into the forgotten archive.

Boxes of Isabella's journals were scattered across the stone floor.

Several priceless notebooks had fallen open.

Loose pages drifted through the air like snow.

Alejandro's eyes immediately found something else.

Blood.

Fresh blood.

A trail led deeper into the darkness.

His breathing stopped.

"No..."

He followed the trail.

Every step felt heavier than the last.

Then he saw Samuel.

The old butler lay against the wall.

His shirt was soaked with blood.

The iron pipe still rested beside him.

Alejandro dropped to his knees.

"Samuel."

The old man smiled weakly.

"I finally..."

"...kept my promise."

Alejandro pressed his hands against the wound.

"We'll get you out."

Samuel slowly shook his head.

"No."

"My time ended..."

"...years ago."

He pointed farther down the tunnel.

"She..."

"...kept running."

"The journals..."

"...she saved them."

A violent cough interrupted him.

Blood stained his lips.

Samuel looked at Alejandro with tears in his eyes.

"I couldn't save your mother."

"But..."

"...I saved her son."

His hand slowly slipped from Alejandro's arm.

The old butler closed his eyes.

And never opened them again.

Alejandro lowered his head.

For thirty-seven years...

Samuel had carried the weight of his silence.

In the end...

He had chosen courage.

Elena's Stand

Farther ahead...

Elena stumbled into an ancient stone chamber.

Her shoulder burned.

The bullet had grazed her.

Behind her...

The impostor security chief slowly approached.

His wrist hung broken from Samuel's attack.

Yet he still held another pistol.

"You've caused enough trouble."

Elena placed Isabella's journals inside an old fireproof chest.

She quietly locked it.

"You'll never find them."

He smiled.

"I don't need the journals."

"I only need you dead."

He raised the pistol.

Suddenly...

A child's voice echoed behind him.

"Leave her alone!"

Little Noah stood at the entrance holding a loose brick with both hands.

The gunman turned.

The distraction lasted only a second.

But it was enough.

Elena grabbed a heavy lantern from the wall and swung it with all her strength.

The iron lantern struck his temple.

He collapsed instantly.

The pistol slid across the floor.

Elena kicked it away.

Noah ran into her arms.

"I didn't want you to die."

She hugged him tightly.

"You saved me."

The Real Lucas

Marcus reached the chamber carrying the little boy rescued from the flooded cell.

The child looked around nervously.

His eyes suddenly locked on the unconscious gunman.

He froze.

Then quietly whispered,

"That's Doctor Owen."

Everyone looked at him.

Marcus knelt.

"You know him?"

The boy nodded.

"He told me my name wasn't Lucas."

"He said..."

"...Lucas died."

Silence.

"What do you mean?"

The little boy pointed to one of Isabella's journals.

"They gave me his name."

"My real name is Ethan."

Grace slowly closed her eyes.

Project Mirror hadn't only replaced adults.

It had erased children's identities too.

The Final Exit

Marcus checked the timer.

00:54

"We have less than a minute."

Samuel had described one final escape route.

The original builders had carved an emergency tunnel leading toward the cliffs.

But no one knew whether it still existed.

Alejandro searched the walls.

Then he noticed something.

A carving.

A jasmine flower.

The same symbol Isabella had used before.

He pressed it.

The stone wall rumbled.

A narrow passage opened.

Cold sea air rushed inside.

Marcus smiled.

"We're getting out."

One by one...

The survivors entered the tunnel.

Children first.

Then the elderly.

Then Grace carrying Isabella's research.

Elena refused to leave until the very last prisoner entered safely.

Alejandro looked at her.

She smiled.

"Together."

He took her hand.

"Always."

Vivian's Decision

Outside...

Emergency crews watched cracks spread across the grounds of Castillo Manor.

Vivian suddenly shouted from inside the armored vehicle.

"The east cliff!"

"They're coming out through the east cliff!"

The investigators looked at her suspiciously.

"Why tell us?"

She answered quietly,

"Because Eduardo lied."

"He promised we'd build the future."

"Instead..."

"...he destroyed everyone who believed him."

For the first time...

Vivian looked genuinely broken.

The Collapse

Deep underground...

The final support column snapped.

The explosion was unlike the others.

The earth itself seemed to roar.

The tunnel shook violently.

Rocks crashed around the escaping survivors.

Marcus shoved two children forward.

"Run!"

Alejandro looked back once.

The laboratory.

The prison.

Project Mirror.

Everything disappeared beneath thousands of tons of collapsing stone.

The underground empire that had hidden beneath Castillo Manor for decades...

Was gone.

The survivors burst from the cliffside exit just as the entire western wing of the mansion folded inward.

Glass shattered.

Marble columns collapsed.

The earth swallowed the hidden prison forever.

Everyone watched in stunned silence.

No one spoke.

Then...

Little Noah quietly reached for Elena's hand.

"We're really outside..."

She looked up at the morning sky.

The storm clouds were beginning to break.

For the first time in three years...

She felt sunlight on her face.

Alejandro wrapped his arm around her shoulders.

"We're free."

She leaned against him.

"Yes."

"But this isn't over."

Marcus looked toward the burning ruins.

She was right.

Project Mirror's headquarters had fallen.

Eduardo was dead.

But dozens of powerful people around the world had financed the project.

Many were still free.

As firefighters rushed toward the collapsing estate...

A black SUV quietly disappeared down a distant coastal road.

No one noticed.

Inside sat Vivian Moretti.

On the passenger seat beside her rested a single waterproof case.

The only item she had managed to save from the helicopter crash.

She slowly opened it.

Inside was one encrypted hard drive labeled:

PROJECT MIRROR — GLOBAL NETWORK

Vivian looked in the rearview mirror one last time.

Then whispered,

May you like

"The game isn't over yet."
