Chapter 10 The Price of Power

Chapter 10

The Price of Power

The echo of Olivia Ashcroft's applause rolled through the underground chamber.

No one moved.

Her thumb rested lightly on the red button of the remote control.

Behind her, four armed men emerged from the shadows wearing black tactical gear without any identifying insignia.

They spread out with practiced precision, silently covering every exit.

Detective Laura Bennett slowly raised her weapon.

"Drop the remote."

Olivia smiled.

"I've heard that line before."

"It never ends well."

The deputies aimed their rifles.

So did the FBI agents.

For several long seconds, the underground vault remained frozen.

Then Olivia spoke.

"You all think you've uncovered the truth."

She glanced toward the towering server racks.

"You haven't even reached the first layer."

Eleanor stepped forward despite Bennett's warning.

"You ordered Richard to attack me?"

Olivia laughed quietly.

"No."

"My brother never needed orders."

"He always confused ownership with entitlement."

"You wanted my condo?"

"No."

Olivia shook her head.

"I couldn't care less about your apartment."

"The dinner was never about real estate."

Eleanor frowned.

"Then why?"

Olivia looked directly at her.

"Because we needed you."

Silence.

Claire whispered,

"What does that mean?"

Olivia walked slowly toward the center of the chamber.

"Your father hid something before he died."

"We searched for eight years."

"We searched every office."

"Every storage unit."

"Every safety deposit box."

"We never found it."

She stopped only a few feet from Eleanor.

"But then..."

"...Richard married you."

She smiled.

"And eventually..."

"...you led us straight back here."

Eleanor felt a chill run down her spine.

"You used me."

"From the beginning."

Olivia nodded.

"The condo."

"The marriage."

"The dinner."

"The assault."

"It was all supposed to force you into making one decision."

"What decision?"

"Open the flash drive."

Claire stared.

"You didn't know what was on it?"

Olivia's expression hardened.

"We knew it contained clues."

"But not the final location."

She pointed toward the underground chamber.

"Your father designed this place to reveal itself only after enough pieces came together."

Daniel looked around the room.

"So we've been following his trail."

Olivia smiled.

"Exactly."

Detective Bennett kept her pistol trained on Olivia.

"If that's true..."

"...what are you actually looking for?"

Olivia looked toward the far wall.

"The Ledger."

Several FBI agents exchanged confused glances.

"The Circle's original ledger."

"The only document that names every founding member."

"The one record that cannot be erased because it predates every digital archive."

The cyber specialist frowned.

"You kept paper records?"

"The founders never trusted computers."

Olivia answered calmly.

"They trusted ink."

"And signatures."

She looked at Eleanor.

"Your father found it."

"He hid it."

"You inherited the map without realizing it."

Eleanor remembered the altered photograph.

The forged signature.

The video.

The letter.

Her father's words echoed in her mind.

'I hid duplicates in places only someone patient would discover.'

Suddenly...

She looked back toward the old desk where they had found the composite photograph.

Something felt wrong.

She walked slowly toward it.

"Eleanor!" Bennett warned.

Olivia made no attempt to stop her.

Instead...

She watched with growing curiosity.

The old wooden desk appeared ordinary.

Dust covered its surface.

One drawer remained slightly open.

Inside lay nothing except an antique fountain pen.

Eleanor picked it up.

Heavy.

Far heavier than a pen should be.

She twisted the silver cap.

Click.

A tiny brass key slid out into her hand.

Daniel stared.

"My grandfather always carried that pen."

Eleanor looked around the chamber.

"There has to be another lock."

The forensic photographer examined the desk more closely.

"There."

He pointed beneath the bottom drawer.

A nearly invisible keyhole.

Eleanor inserted the tiny key.

The lock turned.

A hidden compartment silently opened.

Inside...

Not a ledger.

Not documents.

Just a single cassette tape.

And another envelope.

The envelope contained only one sentence written in her father's handwriting.

The people you fear are not the ones giving orders.

Olivia's smile vanished.

"What?"

For the first time since entering the chamber...

She looked genuinely surprised.

She rushed toward Eleanor.

"Give me the tape!"

Detective Bennett stepped between them.

"No."

Olivia's calm demeanor cracked.

"Open it!"

"Now!"

"You don't understand!"

Before anyone could react...

A deep mechanical rumble shook the chamber.

The server racks began shutting down one by one.

Lights flickered.

Emergency generators activated.

The cyber specialist looked at the nearest monitor.

His face went pale.

"Someone just triggered a system-wide purge."

"Can you stop it?"

He shook his head.

"No."

"It's not deleting files."

"What is it doing?"

He looked up slowly.

"It's transmitting them."

"To where?"

The specialist enlarged the destination window.

Every server in the chamber was sending encrypted copies of its files to hundreds of news organizations, federal prosecutors, financial regulators, and investigative journalists across the country.

Olivia stared at the monitor in disbelief.

"No..."

"No!"

She lunged toward the main server.

Too late.

The upload had already reached ninety-two percent.

Eleanor looked at the envelope in her hand.

She suddenly understood.

Her father had never intended for one person to expose The Circle.

He designed the system so that if anyone found the hidden chamber...

The evidence would automatically be released to the world.

No single raid.

No corrupt official.

No assassin...

Could ever bury the truth again.

Olivia slowly lowered the remote control.

For the first time in her life...

She looked defeated.

Then a quiet voice echoed from the entrance tunnel.

"You always underestimated him."

Everyone turned.

A lone man stepped into the light.

His beard was longer.

His clothes were dusty.

But Eleanor recognized him instantly.

Richard Ashcroft.

He wasn't pointing a weapon at anyone.

Instead...

He was pointing it directly at his own sister.

"You've been hunting the wrong enemy," he said.

"And tonight..."

May you like

"I'm finally going to tell them who really created The Circle."
