Chapter 9 Beneath the Vineyard

Chapter 9
Beneath the Vineyard
The flashing red dot on the GPS map stopped moving.
Everyone in the command room stared at the screen.
"It stopped," the cyber specialist said.
Detective Laura Bennett leaned closer.
"Location?"
He enlarged the satellite image.
Ashcroft Vineyard Estate filled the monitor.
The blinking dot rested beneath the western edge of the property.
Not inside the mansion.
Not inside the winery.
Below them.
"It doesn't make sense," one FBI analyst murmured.
"The signal is underground."
Daniel slowly exhaled.
"There are old tunnels."
Claire looked at him.
"You never told me."
"I've never been inside."
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
"My grandfather built emergency passages during the 1930s."
"They connected the wine cellars to storage bunkers beneath the vineyards."
Vivian, still seated in handcuffs, finally raised her eyes.
"Not bunkers."
Everyone looked at her.
"They're vaults."
Silence settled over the room.
"What kind of vaults?" Bennett asked.
Vivian hesitated.
"My father-in-law never trusted banks."
"He believed secrets were safer underground."
Eleanor noticed something.
Vivian wasn't lying anymore.
For the first time...
She sounded exhausted.
The cyber specialist interrupted.
"The GPS signal is still active."
"Whatever they took..."
"...it's in the underground vault."
Detective Bennett made her decision.
"We move now."
Thirty Minutes Later
Night had settled over Napa Valley.
Blue and red emergency lights reflected across endless rows of grapevines.
Sheriff's deputies.
FBI agents.
Crime scene investigators.
The Ashcroft Estate had become a fortress.
Eleanor stood beside Detective Bennett outside the old stone winery.
She looked toward the mansion.
Only yesterday...
She had believed it was her home.
Now it felt like the entrance to a grave.
Daniel approached carrying an old brass key.
"I found this in my father's study."
Bennett examined it.
"No label."
Daniel nodded.
"My grandfather always said..."
"...every vineyard has roots."
"This family's roots are just darker than most."
They entered the winery.
Dust floated through the air.
The old fermentation room smelled of aged oak and damp stone.
Most of the equipment had not been used for decades.
Claire suddenly stopped.
"Listen."
Everyone froze.
A faint mechanical sound echoed beneath the floor.
Not machinery.
A motor.
Someone was operating something underground.
"They're still here," Bennett whispered.
The deputies spread out.
Daniel walked toward an enormous wooden wine barrel resting against the rear wall.
"My grandfather never let anyone move this."
He placed both hands on the barrel.
"It always seemed..."
"...too heavy."
Four deputies helped push.
The barrel rolled only a few inches.
Then stopped.
A loud click echoed through the room.
Part of the stone floor slowly shifted.
Dust poured into the opening.
A hidden staircase appeared.
Cold air drifted upward.
The smell wasn't wine.
It was damp concrete.
Metal.
And something else.
Something Eleanor recognized from construction sites.
Fresh cement.
Bennett raised her flashlight.
"We're going down."
The staircase descended nearly forty feet.
The walls were carved from old stone.
Electrical wiring had been added decades later.
Someone had modernized the tunnels.
Motion-sensitive lights flickered on one after another.
"They expected visitors," an agent whispered.
The passage widened.
Steel security doors appeared ahead.
One stood slightly open.
Beyond it...
A massive underground chamber stretched farther than anyone expected.
Rows of industrial shelving.
Computers.
Document cabinets.
Large wooden crates.
It looked less like a bunker...
...and more like the headquarters of a multinational corporation.
The FBI agents immediately spread through the room.
One analyst stared in disbelief.
"My God..."
"What?"
"Servers."
Dozens of high-capacity data servers hummed quietly along one wall.
The cyber specialist rushed forward.
"They've been running their own private network."
Another investigator opened a filing cabinet.
It contained property deeds from across California.
Nevada.
Arizona.
Washington.
Each property connected to shell companies already mentioned on Eleanor's father's flash drive.
Harbor Point hadn't been the beginning.
It had simply been the first project they failed to hide.
Then Claire noticed something in the far corner.
"Eleanor..."
A single framed photograph rested on an old desk.
She picked it up.
The picture had been taken fifteen years earlier.
Several men stood together during the groundbreaking ceremony for Harbor Point.
Richard.
Vivian.
Daniel's father.
Several city officials.
And...
Eleanor's father.
She felt her stomach drop.
"No..."
Detective Bennett examined the photograph.
"It looks authentic."
"It can't be."
Eleanor pointed to her father's face.
"He never grew a beard."
The room fell silent.
The forensic photographer stepped closer.
He removed the glass from the frame.
Then smiled.
"It's a composite."
"What?"
"The photograph was altered."
He carefully lifted the printed image.
Another photograph had been hidden underneath.
The original.
Everyone stared.
In the original image...
Eleanor's father wasn't standing beside the Ashcrofts.
He was standing nearly fifty feet away.
Holding a camera.
Photographing the ceremony.
Someone had altered the picture to place him among the conspirators.
Another attempt to rewrite history.
The FBI agents continued searching.
One suddenly shouted.
"Detective!"
Bennett hurried over.
Inside a locked cabinet...
They found passports.
Cash.
Satellite phones.
False identities.
Everything needed for someone to disappear overnight.
Then the cyber specialist called out.
"I found the central server."
Rows of encrypted files filled the screen.
He began opening directories.
Project names.
Financial records.
Secret communications.
Suddenly...
One folder caught everyone's attention.
SUCCESSION
Detective Bennett frowned.
"Open it."
The specialist clicked.
A single document appeared.
At the top:
Circle Leadership Transition Plan
Below it was a list of names.
Most were unfamiliar.
Until Eleanor reached the final page.
At the bottom...
Under the heading:
Next Executive Chairman
One name had been highlighted.
Not Richard Ashcroft.
Not Vivian.
Not Daniel.
The name was:
Olivia Ashcroft
Claire whispered,
"So she wasn't stealing the evidence..."
"...she was preparing to take control."
Before anyone could process the revelation...
A slow clap echoed through the underground chamber.
Everyone spun around.
A lone figure stepped from the shadows.
Perfectly dressed.
Calm.
Smiling.
Olivia Ashcroft.
She wasn't holding a weapon.
Only a small remote control in her right hand.
"I hoped you'd find this place," she said softly.
Her eyes settled on Eleanor.
"After all..."
"...it's much easier to bury witnesses when they're already underground."
She raised her thumb over the remote's red button.
"The only question now..."
"...is whether this chamber becomes your greatest discovery..."
May you like
"...or your tomb."
