Chapter 8 The Woman Hidden Behind the Smoke

Chapter 8

The Woman Hidden Behind the Smoke

Smoke poured through the evidence vault, swallowing the rows of metal shelves.

Eleanor could barely see three feet in front of her.

Someone grabbed her arm.

She instinctively jerked away.

"It's me!"

Claire's voice.

"Eleanor, this way!"

Another explosion echoed outside the vault.

The emergency lights flickered violently as alarms continued screaming throughout the sheriff's headquarters.

Detective Laura Bennett's voice cut through the chaos.

"Protect the civilians!"

Two deputies moved in front of Eleanor and Claire.

Another officer fired a single warning shot toward the entrance.

The three masked intruders never slowed.

They moved with frightening precision.

Military precision.

"They're not here to shoot everyone," Bennett shouted.

"They're here for the evidence!"

One of the masked figures threw a flash device across the floor.

A blinding burst of white light illuminated the vault.

Everyone instinctively shielded their eyes.

When Eleanor looked up again...

The evidence table was empty.

The flash drive was gone.

"No!"

She lunged forward.

The nearest masked intruder had already reached the rear exit.

He carried the evidence bag in his left hand.

Detective Bennett fired once.

The bullet struck a steel cabinet inches from the suspect.

He disappeared into the smoke.

"After him!"

Three deputies rushed into the hallway.

The remaining intruders split in opposite directions.

One vaulted over a row of shelving.

The other kicked over a heavy evidence rack, sending hundreds of sealed boxes crashing across the floor.

The vault became a maze of twisted metal and scattered files.

Claire suddenly pulled Eleanor behind a concrete support column.

"Stay down!"

A gunshot echoed overhead.

Concrete fragments sprayed across the floor.

Someone was firing from the second-floor observation balcony.

Not the intruders.

Someone else.

Another team.

"What is happening?" Eleanor gasped.

Claire looked terrified.

"They're fighting each other."

"What?"

"The Circle never sends one team."

"They never trust anyone."

Detective Bennett heard her.

"What do you mean?"

Claire swallowed.

"They send two."

"Why?"

"So if one fails..."

"...the other eliminates them."

The detective's eyes widened.

A second burst of gunfire erupted from the hallway.

Then...

Silence.

Complete silence.

The smoke slowly began clearing.

Bodies lay scattered across the corridor.

Not dead.

Unconscious.

Every masked intruder had vanished.

Only one evidence bag remained on the floor.

Detective Bennett hurried toward it.

She opened it.

Empty.

The flash drive was gone.

Eleanor's heart sank.

Eight years of evidence...

Lost.

Then the FBI cyber specialist began laughing.

Everyone stared.

"What's funny?"

He pointed toward the evidence bag.

"It isn't ours."

Bennett frowned.

"What?"

"The barcode."

He held up the plastic evidence pouch.

"Our evidence bags are blue."

"This one is gray."

The room went quiet.

"It was switched."

The technician rushed to the evidence log.

He looked at the security footage recorded inside the vault.

Frame by frame.

"There."

He paused the video.

Seconds before the attack...

Someone wearing a sheriff's uniform quietly exchanged the real evidence bag for an identical fake.

Detective Bennett leaned closer.

"Zoom in."

The technician enlarged the image.

The deputy's face remained hidden beneath a protective mask.

But one detail stood out.

A silver bracelet.

Claire gasped.

"I've seen that."

"Where?"

Claire looked at Vivian Ashcroft, who was still seated under guard outside the vault.

"On Olivia."

Everyone looked confused.

"Who's Olivia?"

"My sister."

Daniel answered.

"Richard's younger sister."

"She left California six years ago."

Claire slowly shook her head.

"No."

"That's what everyone was told."

"I saw her two months ago."

"Where?"

"At the estate."

Daniel stared at his wife.

"That's impossible."

"I know what I saw."

Claire closed her eyes.

"She was wearing a sheriff's deputy uniform."

Silence.

Detective Bennett immediately turned toward one of her officers.

"Run every personnel file."

"Anyone named Olivia."

The deputy hurried away.

Minutes later he returned carrying a tablet.

"We found one."

He looked stunned.

"Deputy Olivia Brooks."

"Hired eighteen months ago."

"No disciplinary record."

"Perfect performance reviews."

"Transferred here from Sacramento."

Detective Bennett frowned.

"Show me her photograph."

The deputy opened the personnel file.

Daniel froze.

Claire burst into tears.

Vivian whispered,

"My God..."

The smiling woman in the photograph was unmistakable.

Olivia Ashcroft.

Richard's younger sister.

She had been working inside law enforcement the entire time.

An undercover asset for The Circle.

Eleanor suddenly understood.

The attack hadn't been random.

Someone inside the sheriff's department had prepared it from the beginning.

Before anyone could react...

The cyber specialist's phone vibrated.

He answered.

His expression changed instantly.

"What?"

He turned toward Eleanor.

"The flash drive wasn't stolen."

Everyone stared.

"What do you mean?"

"The GPS tracker hidden inside the evidence bag..."

He looked at the screen in disbelief.

"...is moving."

Detective Bennett leaned over.

"Where?"

The cyber specialist slowly zoomed in on the digital map.

The blinking red dot wasn't leaving Napa County.

It wasn't heading toward the highway.

Or the airport.

It was moving...

Back toward Ashcroft Vineyard Estate.

Claire whispered,

"They're not running."

"They're looking for something."

Eleanor stared at the blinking dot.

The flash drive wasn't the final objective.

It was the key.

Whatever The Circle truly feared...

Was still hidden somewhere inside the Ashcroft mansion.

And Richard had returned to find it before anyone else.
