Chapter 5 The Video That Changed Everything

Chapter 5
The Video That Changed Everything
The digital forensics laboratory became eerily quiet.
No one spoke.
Not Detective Laura Bennett.
Not the FBI agents.
Not Claire or Daniel.
Even Vivian Ashcroft seemed to stop breathing.
The evidence technician inserted the flash drive into an isolated forensic workstation.
A progress bar crawled slowly across the monitor.
Decrypting File...
"Video file verified."
"Timestamp: October 14, eight years earlier."
The screen flickered.
Then stabilized.
A grainy image appeared.
It was recorded inside what looked like a hotel room.
The date and time glowed in the lower corner.
Eleanor's heart stopped.
Her father sat alone at a small wooden desk.
He looked exhausted.
His normally neat gray hair was uncombed.
Dark circles surrounded his eyes.
He glanced repeatedly toward the hotel door before finally looking into the camera.
"If you're watching this..."
He paused.
"...someone has already tried to kill me."
The room remained completely silent.
"I don't know whether I'll survive long enough to finish what I've started."
"So I'm leaving this behind."
He held up a thick folder.
"Everything inside Harbor Point is a lie."
He opened the folder.
Blueprints appeared.
Construction permits.
Financial ledgers.
Photographs.
"The public believes Harbor Point was an unfinished luxury waterfront development."
"It wasn't."
"It was built to clean dirty money."
The image zoomed closer.
He spread several photographs across the table.
One showed a construction site.
Another showed a concrete foundation.
A third...
Made everyone in the room freeze.
Detective Bennett leaned toward the monitor.
"Pause."
The technician froze the frame.
Beneath the concrete foundation...
Several workers stood beside something wrapped in heavy black plastic.
Not construction equipment.
Human-sized packages.
Eleanor whispered,
"What is that?"
No one answered.
Her father continued speaking as the video resumed.
"I thought they were moving construction materials."
"I was wrong."
He took a shaky breath.
"I returned after midnight."
"The concrete hadn't cured."
"I saw them bury three bodies beneath Building Seven."
Claire burst into tears.
Daniel covered his face.
An FBI agent quietly left the room to make a phone call.
Eleanor couldn't breathe.
Her father looked directly into the camera.
"I photographed everything."
"I copied every invoice."
"I memorized every account number."
"I thought the police would protect me."
A sad smile crossed his face.
"I was naïve."
Someone knocked softly on the laboratory door.
Another FBI agent entered carrying a folder.
He whispered something into Detective Bennett's ear.
Her expression hardened immediately.
"Everyone stays here."
She walked into the hallway.
The door remained slightly open.
Eleanor unintentionally overheard part of the conversation.
"...airport surveillance..."
"...private jet..."
"...Richard Ashcroft..."
"...Mexico..."
The detective returned moments later.
"Richard is gone."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"He crossed the border?"
"Not yet."
"The FBI believes he's trying."
Vivian finally spoke for the first time in nearly an hour.
"He won't make it."
Everyone looked at her.
"What do you mean?" Bennett asked.
Vivian stared at the paused image of the buried bodies.
"Richard knows too much."
"He isn't running."
"He's being hunted."
The room became quiet again.
Eleanor looked at the older woman.
"Who would hunt your own son?"
Vivian's answer came almost instantly.
"The people above us."
"The investors."
"The partners."
"The men nobody ever meets."
Detective Bennett folded her arms.
"You've been calling your family a branch of something larger."
"What exactly is it?"
Vivian slowly shook her head.
"I spent thirty years pretending not to know."
"My husband handled those meetings."
"He called them..."
She hesitated.
"...The Circle."
An FBI agent looked up sharply.
"What did you say?"
"The Circle."
The agent immediately exchanged glances with Detective Bennett.
"You've heard of them?"
He nodded slowly.
"For years."
"We've never been able to prove they existed."
"They finance legitimate developments."
"They move illegal money through real estate."
"They eliminate anyone who becomes a liability."
Eleanor suddenly remembered something.
"My father said three accountants died."
The FBI agent answered quietly.
"They weren't the only ones."
He opened another file.
Inside were photographs.
Seven different people.
Architects.
Auditors.
Lawyers.
A journalist.
Every one of them had died within four years.
Official causes varied.
Car accidents.
Heart attacks.
Drownings.
Suicides.
But each photograph carried one identical note.
Worked on Harbor Point.
Eleanor felt sick.
"My father was investigating murders."
"No," the FBI agent replied.
"He uncovered an organization that had been committing them for years."
The technician interrupted.
"There's more."
Another folder on the flash drive had finally decrypted.
Hundreds of scanned bank transfers appeared.
Offshore accounts.
Wire transfers.
Corporate ownership charts.
Then one document caught Detective Bennett's attention.
She enlarged it.
A shareholder agreement.
Signed nine years ago.
At the bottom...
Richard Ashcroft's signature.
Daniel Ashcroft's signature.
Vivian Ashcroft's signature.
And one more.
A signature Eleanor recognized instantly.
Her own father's.
"No..."
She whispered.
"That's impossible."
"My father would never..."
She stopped.
Something wasn't right.
She leaned closer to the monitor.
Her engineering career had taught her to notice tiny details.
The signature looked perfect.
Too perfect.
Every letter identical.
Every curve unnaturally smooth.
She looked at Detective Bennett.
"Zoom in."
The technician magnified the signature.
Another forensic analyst frowned.
"There."
He pointed at the screen.
"No ink pressure variation."
"No natural pen strokes."
"The signature was digitally copied."
Detective Bennett's eyes widened.
"They forged it."
The analyst nodded.
"They needed your father's name on the agreement."
"So if anyone investigated..."
"...he would appear to be part of the conspiracy."
Eleanor suddenly understood everything.
Her father hadn't died before exposing the truth.
He had been framed as one of the criminals.
Tears rolled silently down her face.
For eight years...
The world had remembered him as a corrupt businessman.
When in reality...
He had died trying to stop them.
Before anyone could speak again—
Every computer monitor inside the forensic lab suddenly went black.
The lights flickered.
An alarm began blaring throughout the building.
Then a calm electronic voice echoed over the loudspeakers.
"Warning. Unauthorized access detected."
The evidence technician stared at his screen in horror.
"They're inside our system."
Detective Bennett rushed forward.
"What happened?"
The technician's face turned pale.
May you like
"Someone is remotely deleting every file from the flash drive."
