Chapter 11 The Founder No One Suspected

Chapter 11

The Founder No One Suspected

Richard Ashcroft's voice echoed through the underground chamber.

"You've been hunting the wrong enemy."

The tactical officers instinctively shifted their weapons toward him.

Detective Laura Bennett stepped forward.

"Drop the gun."

Richard slowly lowered the pistol to the floor and kicked it away.

"I'm done running."

Olivia stared at her brother in disbelief.

"You came back."

Richard laughed bitterly.

"You really thought I'd spend the rest of my life protecting you?"

"No."

"I spent enough years protecting this family."

He looked at Eleanor.

"And I destroyed my own marriage doing it."

For the first time since Eleanor had known him...

Richard looked genuinely broken.

The arrogance was gone.

The entitlement had disappeared.

Only exhaustion remained.

The Upload Reaches One Hundred Percent

A soft electronic tone sounded from the server racks.

The cyber specialist looked at the monitor.

"Upload complete."

Every file stored inside the underground network had now been copied to federal agencies, investigative journalists, financial regulators, and multiple secure government archives.

No one could erase them anymore.

Olivia closed her eyes.

"It's over."

Richard shook his head.

"No."

"It isn't."

"They're already moving."

Detective Bennett frowned.

"Who?"

"The people who built The Circle."

"You still haven't told us who they are."

Richard looked around the room.

"You all think my father was in charge."

"He wasn't."

"You think Olivia was next."

"She wasn't."

Claire whispered,

"Then who?"

Richard slowly pointed toward Vivian.

His mother.

"No..."

Daniel said quietly.

"Not Mom."

Richard shook his head.

"No."

"Not Mother."

Everyone followed the direction of his finger.

He wasn't pointing at Vivian.

He was pointing...

Behind her.

Mounted on the stone wall hung an enormous oil portrait of Ashcroft family patriarch Charles Ashcroft, who had died fifteen years earlier.

The painting showed Charles standing proudly among endless vineyards.

Richard's voice became cold.

"My grandfather."

Silence.

"The Circle didn't begin with Harbor Point."

"It didn't begin with Father."

"It began with Charles Ashcroft."

Vivian lowered her head.

"I tried to stop him."

Richard looked at her.

"No."

"You tried to survive him."

Vivian's Confession

For several seconds she said nothing.

Finally...

She spoke.

"When I married into this family..."

"...Charles already controlled judges."

"Bank executives."

"Developers."

"Union leaders."

"He never called it organized crime."

"He called it..."

"'Protecting investments.'"

Daniel stared at his mother.

"You never told us."

"I couldn't."

"He recorded everything."

"He threatened everyone."

Claire frowned.

"But Charles died fifteen years ago."

Vivian nodded slowly.

"Yes."

"But before he died..."

"...he chose successors."

Olivia interrupted.

"Enough."

Vivian ignored her.

"He divided authority."

"One person controlled the money."

"Another controlled the politicians."

"A third controlled law enforcement."

"And another..."

"...controlled the killings."

The room became deathly still.

Detective Bennett quietly asked,

"Who handled the killings?"

Vivian looked directly at Olivia.

"My daughter."

Olivia laughed.

"You've finally found your courage."

Vivian's eyes filled with tears.

"I should have spoken years ago."

A Father's Final Puzzle

Eleanor suddenly remembered the cassette tape.

She handed it to the evidence technician.

"Can we play this?"

Within minutes an old cassette recorder was connected.

The tape clicked into place.

Static crackled.

Then...

Her father's voice filled the chamber.

"If you've reached this recording..."

"...then you've discovered the underground archive."

"I hope you're not alone."

"I hope honest people stand beside you."

He paused.

"I couldn't destroy The Circle."

"Not by myself."

"So I did something else."

"I made them afraid of each other."

Richard closed his eyes.

"He knew..."

The recording continued.

"I planted different pieces of evidence where different members would find them."

"They all believed someone else had betrayed them."

"They stopped trusting one another."

"They became paranoid."

"They started watching each other."

Olivia whispered,

"No..."

Her father's voice continued.

"They'll eventually destroy themselves."

"You only need to survive long enough to watch."

The tape ended with one final sentence.

"Eleanor..."

"I'm sorry you inherited my fight."

"But I know you'll finish it."

Silence followed.

Eleanor wiped away tears.

She had spent eight years believing her father died defeated.

Instead...

He had spent those years quietly dismantling the organization from within.

Betrayal Inside The Chamber

One of the deputies suddenly screamed.

"Gun!"

Everyone turned.

An FBI agent had quietly drawn a concealed pistol.

Not toward Olivia.

Not toward Richard.

Toward Detective Bennett.

"You should've left this buried."

Before anyone could react—

Bang!

A shot rang through the chamber.

Bennett dove behind a server rack.

Deputies returned fire.

The corrupt agent sprinted toward the emergency tunnel.

Three more armed men emerged behind him.

Olivia stared in disbelief.

"I didn't call them."

Richard looked horrified.

"They came to silence everyone."

The cyber specialist shouted,

"They're destroying the servers!"

Gunfire echoed through the chamber.

Hard drives shattered.

Sparks flew from computer racks.

Smoke filled the air.

Eleanor pulled Claire behind a concrete pillar.

Daniel tackled one of the attackers to the ground.

Detective Bennett pursued the fleeing gunman into the tunnel.

The battle lasted less than two minutes.

Then...

Silence returned.

Two attackers were arrested.

One was wounded.

But the corrupt FBI agent escaped into the maze of underground passages.

Detective Bennett returned, breathing heavily.

"He knew the tunnels."

Richard looked toward the darkness.

"So does the real leader."

Everyone frowned.

"The real leader?"

Richard nodded slowly.

"My grandfather founded The Circle."

"My father expanded it."

"Olivia believed she would inherit it."

He looked toward the tunnel where the gunman had disappeared.

"But someone replaced all of us years ago."

Eleanor stared.

"You still haven't told us who."

Richard slowly picked up an old photograph that had fallen from one of the broken filing cabinets.

The picture showed Charles Ashcroft shaking hands with a much younger man in a dark suit.

The man's face had been partly burned away.

Only his name remained handwritten across the bottom.

Jonathan Mercer

Richard's voice dropped to a whisper.

"My grandfather didn't build The Circle alone."

"He built it with Jonathan Mercer."

"And according to every official record..."

Richard swallowed hard.

"...Jonathan Mercer died twenty years ago."

Detective Bennett studied the photograph.

"You're saying he's alive?"

Richard answered quietly.

"I think..."

"...he's the one giving the orders now."

Far above them...

The sound of helicopter blades echoed across the vineyard.

Someone else had arrived.

And judging by the growing noise overhead...

May you like

They had come with an army.
