Chapter 12 The Man Everyone Believed Was Dead

Chapter 12
The Man Everyone Believed Was Dead
The thunder of helicopter blades grew louder.
Dust drifted from the ceiling of the underground chamber.
Detective Laura Bennett looked toward the tunnel entrance.
"Those helicopters aren't ours."
An FBI communications officer pressed a finger to his earpiece.
"No military transponders."
"No sheriff identifiers."
"No federal flight plans."
Richard's face drained of color.
"They're here."
The Vineyard Above
Outside, four black helicopters descended over the Ashcroft Estate.
The aircraft carried no markings.
Only matte-black paint.
Teams in dark tactical uniforms poured onto the vineyard.
They weren't firing.
They moved with discipline.
Within minutes every road leading to the estate had been sealed.
Snipers occupied the surrounding hills.
The mansion...
The winery...
The vineyards...
Everything was surrounded.
Inside the underground chamber, Bennett received a radio call.
"We've lost contact with every unit outside."
"Cell service?"
"Dead."
"Satellite?"
"Blocked."
The cyber specialist looked at his laptop.
"They're jamming every frequency."
Daniel whispered,
"They came prepared."
Olivia Finally Told the Truth
Olivia stared at the monitor showing the security cameras above ground.
"They're early."
Richard looked at her sharply.
"You expected them tomorrow."
"So did you."
Olivia answered quietly.
Richard didn't deny it.
Eleanor stepped closer.
"You've been talking to them."
Richard nodded.
"For years."
Claire looked horrified.
"You betrayed everyone."
"I pretended to."
Silence.
Richard closed his eyes.
"I became one of them..."
"...so I could learn who was truly in charge."
Bennett frowned.
"And?"
Richard laughed bitterly.
"I never met him."
"What?"
"I received instructions."
"Encrypted messages."
"Voice distorters."
"Middlemen."
"No one ever saw the Chairman."
Olivia nodded.
"Neither did I."
"We all worked for a ghost."
A Familiar Voice
Suddenly...
Every monitor inside the chamber switched on.
The room lights dimmed.
The server racks rebooted by themselves.
A single image appeared on every screen.
An elderly man wearing an immaculate charcoal suit.
Silver hair.
Blue eyes.
A calm smile.
Eleanor froze.
She had seen him before.
In the altered photograph.
Jonathan Mercer.
The supposedly dead businessman.
He looked directly into the camera.
"Good evening."
His voice was warm.
Cultured.
Almost grandfatherly.
"I apologize for the inconvenience."
"I had hoped this reunion would happen under more pleasant circumstances."
Nobody spoke.
Jonathan smiled.
"Richard."
"You disappointed me."
Richard stared silently.
Olivia lowered her head.
"I'm sorry."
Jonathan shook his head gently.
"No."
"You simply misunderstood your role."
His eyes shifted toward Eleanor.
"And you..."
He smiled again.
"You're every bit as intelligent as your father."
Eleanor's fists clenched.
"You murdered him."
Jonathan sighed.
"No."
"I offered him a partnership."
"He refused."
"He understood the consequences."
Claire shouted,
"You're lying!"
Jonathan ignored her.
Instead he looked toward Detective Bennett.
"Detective..."
"You have exactly five minutes."
Bennett narrowed her eyes.
"Until what?"
Jonathan raised one finger.
"The tunnels beneath you."
"They were built during Prohibition."
"They're unstable."
He smiled politely.
"I've decided to collapse them."
The room erupted.
Deputies immediately searched for another exit.
The cyber specialist checked seismic sensors.
"Oh my God..."
"It's true."
Small tremors had already begun.
Dust trickled from the ceiling.
Jonathan remained perfectly calm.
"I don't enjoy unnecessary deaths."
"So I'll make an offer."
He looked directly at Eleanor.
"One person comes with me."
"The others leave."
Eleanor already knew the answer.
"You want me."
Jonathan nodded.
"Your father trusted only one person with the final ledger."
"You."
"I don't know where it is."
"I believe you."
He smiled again.
"But you'll remember."
Eventually.
Vivian's Last Secret
Vivian suddenly stood.
"No."
Everyone looked at her.
She slowly removed the wedding ring she had worn for over forty years.
Inside the band...
Tiny engraved numbers.
Richard's eyes widened.
"You kept it?"
Vivian nodded.
"Charles made me wear it every day."
She handed the ring to Eleanor.
"It's a vault key."
Jonathan's expression changed for the first time.
The smile disappeared.
"Vivian."
His voice became colder.
"You shouldn't have done that."
She looked directly into the camera.
"I spent forty years protecting monsters."
"I'm finished."
Jonathan remained silent for several seconds.
Then...
"I was hoping you'd die before finding your courage."
The transmission ended.
Every monitor went black.
The Countdown
The cyber specialist looked at the seismic display.
"The charges are real."
"How long?"
"Four minutes."
Detective Bennett immediately took command.
"Everyone evacuate."
Richard stopped her.
"Not yet."
He looked at Eleanor.
"That ring."
"Give it to me."
She hesitated.
"Trust me."
"I've lied about everything else."
"But not this."
Eleanor handed him the ring.
Richard studied the engraved numbers.
His eyes widened.
"I know where the vault is."
Daniel stared.
"You've known all along?"
Richard shook his head.
"No."
"I just finally understand Grandfather's code."
He pointed toward the massive wine press standing against the far wall.
"It isn't decoration."
"It's the door."
As deputies rushed to help, Richard inserted the ring into a nearly invisible circular slot beneath the antique press.
A deep metallic click echoed through the chamber.
The enormous machine slowly rotated.
Behind it...
A narrow steel passage appeared.
Cold air rushed out.
At the end of the passage stood a single reinforced vault door.
Above the door...
Three words had been engraved into the steel.
FOR ELEANOR HART
The entire chamber fell silent.
Her father hadn't hidden the final truth for investigators.
He hadn't hidden it for the FBI.
He hadn't even hidden it for himself.
He had hidden it...
For his daughter.
Before Eleanor could take a single step toward the vault...
The lights went out.
A single gunshot echoed through the darkness.
Someone screamed.
Then Richard's voice cried out in pain.
And when the emergency lights flickered back on...
Richard Ashcroft was lying on the stone floor.
Blood spread beneath his shoulder.
Standing twenty feet away...
Holding a suppressed pistol...
Was the FBI agent who had escaped.
He smiled.
Then quietly said,
May you like
"Mr. Mercer sends his regards."
