Chapter 4 The Letter My Father Never Meant Me to Read

Chapter 4

The Letter My Father Never Meant Me to Read

The evidence room at Napa County Sheriff's Office was silent except for the hum of fluorescent lights.

Detective Laura Bennett carefully slid the yellowed envelope from the leather case.

Every person in the room watched.

Eleanor sat beside the examination table, a white bandage wrapped around the left side of her head. The stitches above her temple still throbbed, but she barely noticed the pain anymore.

Her eyes never left the envelope.

Daniel stood several feet away under the supervision of a deputy.

Claire sat quietly beside Eleanor.

Vivian Ashcroft remained in handcuffs.

She hadn't spoken a word during the drive from the estate.

Detective Bennett adjusted a pair of latex gloves.

"The handwriting has already been photographed."

She looked at Eleanor.

"If you're ready..."

Eleanor nodded.

Bennett carefully broke the old wax seal.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

The paper had yellowed with age.

Across the top...

Her father's familiar handwriting appeared.

My Dearest Eleanor,

If you're reading this, then I failed.

I hoped I would have enough time to protect you before anyone found out what I discovered.

If I didn't... leave California immediately.

Eleanor's breathing caught.

That was unquestionably her father's writing.

Every letter.

Every stroke.

Every small habit she had watched him make since childhood.

Detective Bennett continued reading aloud.

Eight years ago I accepted a consulting contract from Ashcroft Development.

I believed they were purchasing abandoned waterfront properties for commercial redevelopment.

I was wrong.

The financial records did not match the construction permits.

Millions of dollars disappeared through shell corporations that existed only on paper.

Then people started disappearing too.

The room became painfully still.

Daniel slowly lowered his head.

Claire covered her mouth.

Detective Bennett looked up.

"People disappeared?"

Daniel whispered,

The detective continued.

Three accountants resigned within eleven months.

One died in a boating accident.

One disappeared while hiking.

The third supposedly suffered a heart attack at age forty-one.

None of them had previous medical conditions.

Each had questioned Harbor Point's financial records.

Eleanor felt her stomach twist.

"My father knew..."

Claire quietly nodded.

"He knew too much."

Bennett turned another page.

I copied every document I could find.

I hid duplicates in places only someone patient would discover.

If you have the flash drive, then Claire kept her promise.

Everyone looked toward Claire.

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

"I never opened it."

"You knew about it?" Eleanor asked.

Claire nodded.

"Your father came to see me."

"When?"

"The day before he died."

The room fell silent.

Claire wiped away another tear.

"I was pregnant."

"I had only been married into the Ashcroft family for six months."

"He said I was the only person inside the family who still looked at people instead of money."

Eleanor stared.

"My father trusted you?"

"He didn't have anyone else."

Claire closed her eyes.

"He gave me the drive."

"He said if anything happened to him..."

"...I had to wait until someone inside the family finally fought back."

She looked directly at Eleanor.

"He believed that person would be you."

Eleanor couldn't speak.

Detective Bennett quietly resumed reading.

Do not trust everyone wearing the Ashcroft name.

One of them tried to stop this.

One of them secretly helped me.

One of them risked everything.

Protect that person.

Bennett lowered the letter.

"Who was he talking about?"

Daniel slowly raised his hand.

"It was me."

Every head turned.

Vivian closed her eyes.

Richard's younger brother took a long breath.

"I found out what Father was doing."

"I wanted to go to the police."

"My father threatened Claire."

Claire's shoulders shook.

"He said if Daniel talked..."

"...our unborn baby would never be born."

The words hit Eleanor harder than anything she had heard that night.

"You stayed silent..."

"...to save your child?"

Daniel nodded.

"I hated myself every day."

Detective Bennett folded her arms.

"So Harbor Point was criminal."

Daniel looked directly into her eyes.

"It wasn't just Harbor Point."

"What do you mean?"

He hesitated.

"There were five developments."

"Harbor Point was simply the first."

"Every project laundered money through fake construction companies."

"And when auditors started asking questions..."

He couldn't finish the sentence.

The detective did.

"They died."

Daniel slowly nodded.

The room became suffocatingly quiet.

Then an FBI agent entered carrying a tablet.

"Detective Bennett."

She looked up.

"What is it?"

"We identified the SUV that fled the estate."

"Richard abandoned it twenty-three miles away."

"No sign of him."

The agent hesitated.

"But that's not the biggest problem."

He placed the tablet on the table.

Satellite images appeared.

Several black SUVs.

Private aircraft.

Multiple vehicles leaving a corporate airfield outside Sacramento.

"They're moving."

"Who?"

The FBI agent looked around the room before answering.

"The people financing Harbor Point."

Eleanor frowned.

"I thought this was about my husband's family."

The agent slowly shook his head.

"No."

"The Ashcrofts aren't at the top."

"They're only one branch."

He zoomed in on a corporate organizational chart.

Dozens of companies.

Hundreds of millions of dollars.

Offshore accounts.

Political donations.

Luxury developments across California.

Nevada.

Arizona.

Washington.

Harbor Point was just one small box in the center.

Detective Bennett looked stunned.

"This isn't one family."

The FBI agent answered quietly.

"No."

"It's a criminal enterprise that's been hiding behind legitimate businesses for nearly twenty years."

Eleanor stared at the flash drive resting inside its evidence bag.

She had believed it contained the secret that destroyed one wealthy family.

Instead...

It appeared capable of destroying an entire empire.

Then the evidence technician hurried into the room.

"Detective!"

"What is it?"

"We finally accessed the flash drive."

Everyone stood.

The technician's face had turned pale.

"There are over four thousand encrypted files."

He swallowed hard.

"But one video wasn't encrypted."

"What video?"

The technician looked directly at Eleanor.

"It was recorded by your father."

"He begins by saying..."

The room waited.

May you like

"...'If you're watching this, someone has already tried to kill me.'"
