Chapter 11 - THE LEDGER CHARLES BROUGHT BACK.
Charles placed the original housing ledger on the ballroom table.
“These apartments never belonged to the Harrington family,” he said. “They were purchased through payroll deductions from cooks, drivers, maids and maintenance workers.”
Victoria called the ledger a forgery created by a man who had faked his own death.
Leah opened the first page. Every deduction matched the records residents had already produced.
Mrs. Harrington stared at her husband.
“You let me believe our family gave them charity.”
Charles answered, “The word charity kept wealthy donors comfortable. Ownership would have made them afraid.”
Leah refused to let his return turn him into a hero.
“You endangered your wife, framed Victoria with false evidence and used me as the person everyone would blame.”
Charles claimed the staged brake failure was the only way to stop the sale before midnight.
Then Ethan found a sealed ownership page.
