THE DIAMOND IN THE BRAKE / Chapter 3 / 30

Chapter 3 - The Service Order

The wheelchair had been inspected that morning.

A maintenance tag confirmed the brake worked properly at 10:00 a.m.

By 7:30 p.m., the diamond charm had been forced into the latch.

Only three people requested access to the chair during that period.

Mrs. Harrington’s nurse.

The mansion’s accessibility technician.

Victoria.

She claimed she needed the wheelchair moved for photographs.

“I wanted the landing symmetrical.”

Mrs. Harrington looked around at the candles, flowers and champagne tables.

“My safety interfered with your symmetry?”

Victoria exhaled sharply.

“That is not what I said.”

Leah retrieved the technician’s service order.

Victoria had added a handwritten request:

Do not lock the rear brake until after the family entrance.

Ethan stared at her.

“Why?”

“The chair needed to roll smoothly for the presentation.”

“My mother is not part of a presentation.”

Victoria’s expression tightened.

“She is the foundation chair. Her appearance matters.”

There it was.

Mrs. Harrington’s comfort mattered less than the photograph of her appearing elegant beneath the chandelier.

Leah looked at the document again.

The request had been approved electronically by Ethan’s office.

He went still.

“I never approved that.”

Victoria answered quickly.

“You authorized me to handle gala logistics.”

“Not safety equipment.”

“You signed the access form.”

Ethan remembered clicking through dozens of event approvals while boarding a flight.

He had not read the attachment.

Mrs. Harrington looked at him.

“You trusted the form because it came from someone wearing diamonds.”

Then Leah found a second page.

The gala entrance was not the only reason Victoria needed the brake unlocked.

Mrs. Harrington had been scheduled to sign a property transfer on the landing.
