THE DIAMOND IN THE BRAKE / Chapter 27 / 30

Chapter 27 - THE WOMAN WHO NEVER DIED IN THE FIRE.

Ethan’s surrendered credentials had been copied before the gala.

Cyber investigators traced the duplicate to the Harrington family office, where Victoria’s assistant had used it after receiving instructions from an encrypted account.

Victoria denied ordering the changes.

Leah did not rush to defend her.

“In this family, innocence must come from evidence, not social rank.”

The encrypted messages instructed the assistant to erase Charles and replace him with deceased employees who could not testify.

The sender signed only with the letter H.

Mrs. Harrington believed it referred to her.

Charles believed it referred to Harrington Development.

Marcus believed it meant Helen Ward, the society’s former director.

Helen had supposedly died in the same nonexistent fire.

Denise produced a recent photograph taken outside her apartment.

An elderly woman was watching Leah from across the street.

Mrs. Harrington recognized Helen immediately.

“She knows where the children were sent.”

Before agents could locate her, Helen called the council.

“I will testify,” she said, “but only after Leah asks Ethan why his blood is in all twelve guardianship files.”
