THE DIAMOND IN THE BRAKE / Chapter 23 / 30

Chapter 23 - THE DEATH RECORD FILED BEFORE BIRTH.

Leah’s false death record had been created before her birth to prevent Marcus’s future child from inheriting his thirty-percent share.

Charles blamed Victoria’s grandfather.

Marcus interrupted him.

“No. I signed the preliminary form.”

He had been told the record was a placeholder that would be corrected after Leah was born. When he tried to change it, Harrington attorneys threatened his family.

Leah looked at him without raising her voice.

“You placed their paper above my future because they made fear feel urgent.”

Marcus accepted removal from all trust decisions.

The probate court restored Leah’s identity, but she refused personal ownership of the thirty percent.

“It belongs to every family my father represented.”

The council converted the shares into equal resident votes.

Then attorneys discovered the false death record had been used for more than inheritance.

Someone had collected a child life-insurance payment under Leah’s name.

The beneficiary was Margaret Sloan.

Margaret stared at the document.

“I never received that money.”

Bank records showed it purchased the apartment where Leah’s mother had lived after Marcus disappeared.
