Chapter 17 - THE ISLAND BOUGHT IN A DEAD DRIVER’S NAME.
Leah reached Marcus by secure video from the Boston facility.
He was older, weak but fully aware.
“I never owned an island,” he said. “Charles used my name because a dead Black driver drew less attention than a living Harrington.”
Charles insisted the property was a safe house for threatened witnesses.
Marcus answered, “You built luxury protection for a few while residents worried about rent.”
Leah asked why her father had agreed to disappear.
Marcus confessed that Victoria’s grandfather threatened to accuse Leah’s mother of theft and place young Leah in foster care.
“I chose the lie that kept you with family.”
Leah’s voice broke.
“You kept me safe by letting me believe I was unwanted.”
Marcus did not ask forgiveness.
The resident council restored his voice but denied him automatic control of the trust.
Then Marcus identified the island’s real purpose.
It stored original deeds from twelve other old-money housing trusts across Boston.
