THE DIAMOND IN THE BRAKE / Chapter 8 / 30

Chapter 8 - The Bracelet

Victoria touched her wrist.

“It was a foundation gift.”

Mrs. Harrington shook her head.

“It was purchased with retirement money.”

The bracelet contained twelve diamond charms.

Each represented one apartment property.

Victoria wore it at galas celebrating affordable housing.

Workers paid for the diamonds symbolizing homes she planned to sell.

The injustice was almost too perfect.

The trust attorney placed the bracelet under financial review.

No one removed it from Victoria.

No one publicly stripped her of anything.

But she could no longer sell, transfer or hide it.

Its value would be returned to the resident repair fund.

Victoria’s face burned beneath the attention of the guests.

“You are humiliating me.”

Leah looked at the severed brake mechanism.

“You accused me of trying to kill an old woman.”

Silence.

The bracelet’s purchase invoice carried another signature.

Mrs. Harrington’s late husband, Charles.

He had approved using the housing fund to buy “donor-recognition jewelry.”

Mrs. Harrington looked devastated.

“I believed he paid for it privately.”

Leah did not comfort her with a lie.

“Your family believed many things because employees carried the consequences.”

Mrs. Harrington nodded.

Then she made a decision.

The mansion would transfer forty percent of its event income into the resident trust.

Workers staffing galas would receive profit participation.

No event could charge expenses to the housing fund again.

The guests applauded softly.

Leah did not.

Justice was not generosity when it returned something already owed.

Then the jeweler’s archive revealed a strange detail.

Victoria’s bracelet had been missing that exact charm for three years.
