Chapter 21 - THE THIRTEENTH CHILD IN THE PHOTOGRAPH.
Leah enlarged the photograph while Ethan compared it with old school records.
The twelve children were sons and daughters of cooks, drivers, nurses and maintenance workers whose families had funded the housing alliance.
Ethan was the only child from a wealthy household.
Marcus explained that the alliance created education trusts for every child, but the old-money families redirected the money into private schools for their own heirs.
Leah had received nothing.
Ethan had received almost four million dollars.
He stared at the list.
“My education was paid with money taken from children whose parents served my family.”
Charles claimed Ethan had been included as a safeguard because one Harrington heir needed legal standing to protect the trust.
Leah answered, “A safeguard that receives the largest benefit is still privilege.”
The council froze Ethan’s remaining trust and ordered restitution.
Then the photograph was scanned under ultraviolet light.
A thirteenth child appeared beneath the faded image.
