Margaret admitted arranging the apartment but insisted the money came from a Harrington emergency fund.
Leah’s mother, Denise Morgan, joined the hearing by video.
“She told me the apartment was charity,” Denise said. “I cleaned three Harrington homes to repay it.”
The so-called gift had trapped Denise in unpaid labor for twelve years.
Margaret’s voice broke.
“I thought housing her was better than letting the family take Leah.”
Leah answered, “You kept us together by turning my mother into someone else’s property.”
The resident council ordered a full accounting of every “emergency” payment tied to unpaid service.
Margaret surrendered her pension and testified without seeking immunity.
Denise revealed she had kept rent receipts proving she paid for the apartment twice—once through work and again through deductions.
The receipts carried a coded property number.
It matched neither Harrington nor Whitmore records.
The building belonged to the Boston Children’s Relief Society.
Mrs. Harrington went pale.
“That charity closed after the fire.”
