The Boston Children’s Relief Society had housed children of domestic workers who became ill, disappeared or challenged wealthy employers.
Officially, it offered temporary care.
In practice, it transferred guardianship to donor families while parents worked to repay fabricated debts.
Leah found twelve names matching the children in the photograph.
Ethan’s name appeared as a donor child used to make the program look integrated.
Victoria called the files ancient history.
Denise answered, “History is what rich families call harm after the victims become old.”
Mrs. Harrington admitted serving on the society’s board at twenty-six.
She claimed she believed the parents had consented.
Every consent form was written only in English, though many parents spoke Spanish, Haitian Creole or Portuguese.
The interpreter signatures belonged to Charles.
He said he translated what lawyers gave him.
Leah replied, “You knew enough languages to take children, but not enough responsibility to question why.”
Then one guardianship file showed Leah had been scheduled for transfer to a Harrington relative.
